Everyone gives GM grief for rebadging Chevys as Pontiacs and all that, but could someone explain to me the difference between Ford and Mercury? Every single Mercury is a rebadged Ford as far as I can tell (not even appreciably restyled). So what makes a Grand Marquis different than a Crown Victoria; what makes a Montego different from a Five Hundred?

Fords are bought by middle class american families, Mercury are bought by retired people.

Mercury is "supposed to be" more luxurious versions of Fords. But I agree with dukenukem...

Fords are for the middle class, while Mercury is for the slightly wealthier middle class. Not any real differences between them. I think ford should just offer mercury's as higher models of their current vehicles and kill of the brand mercury at together.

Mercury is just kind of a dead brand. The difference between GM and Ford though is that Ford just has one dead brand, GM however, survives on it.

That's why I have one! thumbs_up.gif

I think it's purpose is to be the classier side of Ford's line. Like the Grand Marquis which I can only guess is a bigger brother sort of deal to the Crown Vic and the same with the Montego and the Taurus or the Five Hundered. That or they are just slightly redesigned and rebadged for the hell of it.

not really, many other manufacturers offer something different. Mercury has almost EXACTLY the same lineup as Ford's with minor differences.

The SUVs, maybe. And the ES is an upgraded Camry. But what precisely is the IS a "rebadged" version of? How about the SC? GS? LS? None of these cars are rebadged Toyotas. And those that are rebadged are a very significant upgrade in luxury. They are to Toyota what Lincoln is to Ford--not what Mercury is to Ford.

When is the last time Mercury made a car that did not also appear with any other badge? A single car?
