How is the design on these particular Fords so different that causes this to happen?

Yeah, Honda and Toyota build tons of cars in the USA now. So does Hyundai. All three are far more profitable than any of the "American" manufacturers, who are tanking despite making an increasing number of models outside of the United States.

Yeah, Honda and Toyota build tons of cars in the USA now. So does Hyundai. All three are far more profitable than any of the "American" manufacturers, who are tanking despite making an increasing number of models outside of the United States. Look at how many cars that a lot of these companies have in their lineup. And a bad thing really is, well for example GM's parts bin. You'll find that very same part in their cheapest car in their most expensive car. Somehow American car companies are jacking up the prices insanely high on their cars to make huge profits while they're cutting corners and people aren't buying into that anymore. It's like why do I want to pay $65k for this Corvette which has all the knobs from an Aveo and the steering wheel from a Cavalier? Just as an example. Of course started with Ford... Bam, slam a Mecury badge on it and charge an extra few thousand dollars and see if these idiots are dumb enough to buy into it. American car companies screw their customers, that's why sales are declining. Fords bursting into flames getting hit in the rear... cutting corners. I would hate to know that I drive a vehicle in which Ford decided it's against their best interst to give me the extra bit of protection because they don't think accidents as such are very likely. |

*deep breath* Okay. Here we go.
Their quality control may be a little off sometimes, but that's an attempt to keep prices reasonable. And its difficult to argue that the quality is that low when GM's #1 selling car last year was the CTS. Yes, above the Cobalt. The Corvette is an entirely seperate example. The people who buy Corvettes do not care about the cheap plastics, or the steering wheel. They care about being fast, and only being fast. Fact is, for just $50,000 (price of a base C6 M6 with an LS2), you can start blowing the doors off of cars that are twice as expensive. Quality control be damned, they want something for speed. A noble thesis, for sure. I'll agree that the lineup is unoriginal for the other brands. And sales for Mercury and Lincoln have been waning - thanks also to the part that their chief demographic is dying (literally). However, making a blanket statement that American car companies screw their customers is flat out wrong. Cutting corners has been the name of the price game forever in the car industry. Go take a look at the French cars, particularly Renaults. Nissans too, for that matter. However, before Carlos Ghosn took over Nissan and cut prices of materials, they were declining in sales rapidly. Moreover, Nissan platform shares more than any other car company. Every one of their models (excluding a couple of their trucks) shares the same VQ35DE. I admire the variety and central strategy that Nissan has developed, and I'd like to see GM and Ford do much the same. Additionally, I'd love to see Ford make Lincoln do the turnaround that Cadillac has in the past decade. I would hate to know that I drive a vehicle in which Ford decided it's against their best interst to give me the extra bit of protection because they don't think accidents as such are very likely. In E46 BMWs, the passenger's airbags have been known to go off without warning. The ball bearing wasn't secured properly from the factory, causing suspension failure if the weight is taken off while driving. The lower steering shaft may fail. On Golfs, the brake servo vaccuum pipe might fail, causing the power assist to the brakes to be shut off. These sorts of things happen to all car manufacturers, all the time. Not just Ford. American car companies are losing sales because the health care costs of their UAW workers is too high to keep the prices on their cars down. The profitable American cars, i.e. the Mustang and 300C, are produced in a non-union plant by a third party and in Canada (non-union) respectively. Its not that "American cars suck" so they're not selling. |

Whoa, I'd like to know some more info on that E46 airbag issue. Were there any recalls issued? I'm curious because a friend of mine is purchasing an E46 in the next few months.
