The Audi R10 is a racing car prepared for sports car racing in the LMP1 class of the 24 Hours of Le Mans and other similar endurance races. The car was unveiled Tuesday, December 13, 2005 at 12:00 CET, and went on to win both its maiden race at the 2006 12 Hours of Sebring and the 2006 24 Hours of Le Mans. It was the first diesel to win either of those events. This is the most ambitious and the most expensive project ever undertaken by Audi Motorsport, the Audi R10 project costs Audi $15 Million a year.

ENGINE
The main novelty of the R10 is its engine: a TDI turbodiesel engine, running on Shell V-Power Diesel. It is a 5.5 L (335.6 ci) all-aluminium bi-turbo 90° V12, with common rail direct injection of more than 1600 bar (23,206 psi). Its output should be 485 kW (650 hp) (regulated) and 1100 N·m (811 ft·lbf) of torque, and its usable power band is between 3000 and 5000 rpm.
"The World's Most Powerful Diesel"

With over 650 hp and 1100 Newton metres torque, the V12 TDI propelling the Audi R10 is actually the world’s most powerful engine, which also makes extreme demands of the R10 drive train. The power and torque is available to the driver practically from idling speed, a speciality of diesel technology, to which the Audi drivers must now become accustomed. With a usable power band of between 3000 and 5000 revs per minute, the drivers do not have to change gear so often. The very low noise level and the smooth running characteristics are unique for a racing engine. One of the diesel engine’s biggest advantages is the low consumption, particularly on part-throttle and overrun, a disadvantage is the fact that 90 litres of diesel is almost five kilograms heavier than 90 litres of petrol.

Have you ever driven a modern diesel car? Saying diesel engines are truck engines is just bullshit nowadays...

I personally like a diesel more ( at the same bhp level) than a normal gasoline engine in a normal car (daily driver). Why? The amount of torque is significantly higher, and that's what you want in traffic, overtaking and constant stop-and-go driving.

Right, diesel is complete shit. That's why Audi has dominated Le Mans for the past few years now.

Get your head out your ass.

The R8 was cooler. The R10 is definitely IMPRESSIVE, but I won't call it frozen by any means. Cool by default.

I don't feel that any of those things make a car cool. But I don't vote on racecars anymore, so how ever insignificantly my one vote may have affected the poll will not be an issue.

Frozen...this car really leaves an impression on you when seeing it live because of how freaking quiet it is. Usually wouldn't be good for a racecar but I just like how it silently dominated the competition.
