Not sure about the widely available part. But then again i havent really been looking for them much and have only seen like 5 of them on the road. I meant regionally; sorry for the confusion. Southern Oregon is very domestic-centric. CTSs probably outnumber G35s 10 to 1 down here. |

Duke has a point. I believe the last-gen CTS-V really did do its part as a halo model. A lot of people did up their regular CTSs with original equipment from Cadillac to look like the V. The actual CTS-V is a rarer animal...don't take my word for it though, it's just something I read somewhere.

^I don't know how common it is, but wasn't there a problem associated with the first gen CTS-V's manual tranny? I remember reading about some warranty woes. There was a wheel-hop issue, but seeing as they used a standard Tremec T-56 as the transmission (its a very stout tranny, to say the least), I can't imagine this would be the issue. Also, moe, the dress-up bits (grille, specifically) are rather common, but the CTS-V's are certainly not that common at all (thankfully). You can pick them up down here for under-20s to mid-20s until you're blue in the face. Mitlov, have you looked into getting just a run-of-the-mill G8 GT? They should have the 6-spd by later this year, and they look (and move) quite impressive. The GXP is looking to be avaliable for around $40k if you're really looking to go high-performance, but the GT still has enough to keep things entertaining. |

New G8 is definitely out of the question due to price. I've seen first-gen CTS-Vs in Oregon on AutoTrader at around $20,000, which is why I mentioned it. In reality, if I do trade cars in the next year or so (which I may actually do after having my first major electronics gremlin in the Jetta this weekend, a door locks problem), I'd probably go for a first-gen G35. Especially since the second-gens came out, the used prices of the first-gens has plummeted (upper teens is easily attainable), and my understanding is that they're very reliable (and the low resale is due to the awful dashboard plastics) and very competent sport sedans. I'd have to drive to Portland to buy one (about 5 hours away), but they're a dime a dozen there. |

I drove around an early model FX45 for a couple days last week. The interior plastics are truly atrocious. They were worse than my Mazda, and we're comparing an econobox with a top-of-the-line luxury SUV.

Yeah the first gen FX had one of the ugliest interiors I've ever been in. Even the model update first gens are pretty ugly. The new ones are gorgeous though! But the worst was the QX56! That thing's interior is/was horrendous! Bad build quality too.
It sounds like there is a whole lot of V8 talk in here too (CTS-V, G8 GT, M45). The cost of owning a V8 is significantly higher than a 6-cylinder. I'm lucky I don't have to pay for gas or insurance on my M45, but if I did I would surely reconsider. I think nearly everyone is expecting gas prices to rise continually throughout the upcoming months as well. I'm a firm believer that the prices we are seeing now will likely be the lowest we will ever see again in our lives. Gas aside, V8s are terribly addicting. I'm in love with the 8-cyl in my M. Even though the Wive's EX is only down 35ish HP, the torque and sound of the 8 is awesome!!! A used first gen G35 sedan is a good choice for sure. The 6 speeds are really fun. Another thing I've noticed is that the black interior trim looks 100 times better than the grey/beige ones. I really like the black dash/door trim with the light interior. That beige/grey is just so dated looking. |

I realize that the interior materials are awful, but between mini-Mitlov's occupational and speech therapy bills (perhaps $1,000 per month), my wife's student loans, and micro-Mitlov on the way, we're in a tough financial spot right now. When I prioritize between affordability, driving pleasure, reliability, and interior quality, the dashboard comes in dead last by a wide margin. |

Even if you had it shipped to Oregon from here thats only $5k more than a used car. |

The G8 is a performance bargain, no doubt. My reservations about it are (1) if something seems too good to be true, it probably is, and the G8 GT at $23,000 seems waaaaaay too good to be true, and (2) if I ditch the Jetta, it's due to reliability issues, so the new car HAS to be reliable. And GM (unlike Japanese, Korean, and Ford) is still a reliability question mark in my mind.
Anyway, the power windows started acting up this morning as well, so something is definitely wrong with the electronics, and it's getting worse by the day. The car is at a trusted independent mechanic's shop right now; hopefully they can get to the root of this. If the Jetta gives me trouble through this year, particularly if it's expensive trouble, I might have a new car by 2010 (new to me, not new-new). EDIT: Let's let this thread be about the Maxima and move "Mitlov's car quandry" to this thread: http://forums.dieselstation.com/index.php?showtopic=26627 |
