For 2007, the Elantra was completely redesigned from the ground up. Finally, it raises its game up to the big boy level alongside the Hondas and Toyotas... while still offering a very long warranty and relatively low price for its class. In North America, the only engine available is the 2.0L which is still quite refined over the last iteration of the Hyundai engine. Most importantly to this particular segment of cars is that the engine offers better fuel economy over its predecessors.

Pricing, Economy & Standard Warranty

Price
Base Trim - $15,845 CAD / $13,870 USD
Fully Loaded - $23,195 CAD / $16,570 USD

Warranty
5-year / 100,000km (60,000mi) Comprehensive Limited

Fuel Economy
Manual - 8.4L per 100km (24mpg) City / 6.0L per 100km (33mpg) Highway
Automatic - 8.2L per 100km (28 mpg) City / 6.0L per 100km (36 mpg) Highway

Technical Specifications

Drivetrain: Front Wheel Drive
Engine: 2.0L I4 16-valve CVVT producing 138hp @ 6000rpm / 136lb/ft o' torque @ 4600rpm
Transmission: 5-spd manual & 4-spd automatic
Weight: 1246 kg / 2747lbs
Length / Width / Height: 4506mm (177.4in) / 1775mm (69.9in) / 1481mm (58.3in)

It's borderline but I'm edging it toward cool just because I'd so much rather see someone in one of these than another Civic or Corolla.

A civic or corolla is not cool. A car that is trying to be a civic or corolla is MJU. C'mon guys, have you any concept of what makes a car cool? Put aside he fact that you know anything about cars. This car is really really uncool, and someone gave it a frozen.

A Civic or Corolla is quite uncool as they're extremely played out.

This Elantra? It's very nicely styled, it's fresh, and it's a brand new and quite a reasonable option in an extremely competitive and tight market segment. To sort of reiterate what clark said above... seeing someone in one of these instead of another Honda or Toyota is pretty damn refreshing. It may not be Frozen, but it sure is cool.

I've got this reputation among friends and family of being "the car guy". I'm surrounded by non-enthusiasts who, when the time comes, come to me for car buying advice. Of course, they don't really want advice, they just want me to confirm what they think they want. What do they inevitably want? Something horribly dull, like a civic or a corolla. Challenging their deep-seated biases and expanding their horizons ENOUGH to get them into something even as slightly different as an Elantra is a huge victory. That's where I'm coming from, if that makes any sense.

This car is not cool. It's a bland looking economy car with a really silly line on the side. The only positive thing to say about it is that it's on par with the industry standard for bland economy cars.

How the shit is this cool? The corolla of course, isn't cool either. But with a civic at least you have a cool-ass interior. This has cool-nothing. My asshole 75 year old neighbor has an elantra; he needs 3 football fields to back the car out and makes us move our cars in the process too. Fuck him.

uncool.

A good, practical, pleasant economy car, but about as exciting as unsweetened oatmeal. Smart, but uncool.

By the way, "Rachel Ray Uncool" is a fucking awesome label. MJ Uncool, while awesome for a while, has been done too many times.

I move that, from now on, no one is allowed to describe warranty coverage of a car in a cool wall poll. Does anyone second?

EDIT:

Who said this was frozen? Why?

Uncool, but only because I would have sex with Rachel Ray.

It is a goddamn motherfucking jesuschristinachickenbasket low-range Hyundai. This is transportation. This is about as cool as a monthly pass on the bus. I'm losing faith in my fellow "enthusiasts".

Good purchase? Yes. Logical? Yes. Cool? Your inner-accountant killed your inner-child.

It's cool when I see a non-enthusiast in one because it's like "bravo, you got over the stereotypes and bought yourself a good car even if it is korean." For an enthusiast, it's clearly lame, but I looked at it the way I chose to.

So is anyone going to second my motion to ban all references to WARRANTY COVERAGE from the cool wall?

But does the car itself evoke an emotional reaction in your gut?

I actually thought it was pretty ugly when it first came out. They're extremely common here in Saudi, so familiarity has made it easier on the eyes. I still hate that interior design, and I really, really wouldn't want one. It's just as soulless as a Corolla, and ugly to boot.

I voted Rachel Ray Uncool.

Quit asking me that question. I vote with my gut, and then struggle to justify it later. But I still vote with my gut, everytime.

Oh boo hoo. You've spent years coming down on people for "confusing good with cool." Do a search on the cool wall for posts by clarkma5 that contain the word "good" and count the number of times you've made such comments. You never gave any posters the benefit of the doubt if their explanation for their vote reeked of logical analysis instead of emotion. But in two recent threads (this and the Genesis), your posts sounded suspiciously like left-brain analysis, and now nobody is allowed to question whether you're confusing good with cool?

Ummmm wow you're being damned aggressive for a subjective debate on something that we can't even agree on the definition of. Yeah I tell people they confuse good with cool, but if they came back and said what I just said to you I would back off.

And for the record, you just voted the Diablo uncool. I mean, c'mon man, fair's fair. If I can vote the Elantra cool based on my gut feeling and on my attempted explanation (remember, my first post said I was borderline anyway), then you can vote the Diablo uncool. It's all opinions here and, yeah, I'll try and steer people toward thinking with their hearts and guts instead of their heads, but all they need to say is "I already was thinking with my heart, it's just hard to explain that exactly" and I would say "ok, man, cool, just so you get the point of the cool wall."

When Mitlov, a family man, a good father, husband, and gentleman, and very much the student of logic, is calling a car uncool for its practicality, well, shit.

I cannot argue with that. A veritable impossibility.

Yeah but I didn't call it uncool because it was impractical or objectively bad. I called it uncool because I think Lambos are ugly and generally gross. Read what I wrote in that thread again. There is nothing REMOTELY rational about my dislike of the Diablo.

QUOTE(Mitlov @ Aug 4 2008, 06:10 PM) *
Uncool because I have an intensely negative gut reaction to Lambos, a gut reaction I can't really put into words. But it's particularly true of Lambos that look like rolling door stoppers.

My issue is not that you like Hyundais. My issue is that the reasons you describe why you like them all sound very rational, even though you've stated that it's just a "gut feeling." i.e., you have intense respect for the quality of the Genesis, and respect for people who can put aside badge prejudices and buy one. To me, that just doesn't sound like any gut feeling I've ever had. That sounds like cold rationality.

A friend of mine has one of these and I hate riding in it. This is is below uncool, sure it is cheap is well equipped but god it's ugly.

If you see one check out the sheet metal used for the body it may as well be plastic and that wavy line down the side is just to much for me to handle. Then try to sit in one for 20 or so minutes and you'll start to hate the interior. I thought it was bad in the cobalt, shit this is far worse. This is the first car I think I've sat in where your legs go straight to the floor unlike most other cars where they move out in front of you because the seats sit that high.

I have utterly no experience with this car, so this is subjective, but it looks like a Corolla that someone made more boring. The fact that it may be a smart choice for someone looking for basic transportation didn't influence this decision, and maybe some one on one with this car would change my opinion.

Uncool
