![]() ![]() ![]() U.S. model engine lineup - * 2.0 L (122 cu. in.): 148 bhp (110 kW), 135 lbf·ft (183 N·m) * 2.3 L (137 cu. in.): 160 bhp (119 kW), 150 lbf·ft (203 N·m) 0-60 for the 2.3 manual was 7.4-8.0 according to official sources, but the 2.0 Sport with the automatic did 9.0. As a note, it was the third best selling car in Canada. My take? A weak sequel to the cool Protege. The automatic model I drove felt anemic, and shifted slower than molasses in January. But, crappy transmission aside, it wasn't too bad. Power was decent for the 2.3, interior was nice, gauges were cool. Just make sure you get the manual. |

I remain bitter that the 3 is not as good to drive as the Protegé it replaced. Uncool.

I maintain, that you are wrong Clarkma. I learned to drive on Proteges, and loved them, but they lacked the 3's composure, and all-round ability.
As for the 3? I want to say cool. It handles better than most cars in this class, is stylish, and very important for a car of this class...never reminds you that you're in fact driving an econobox. But...I'm going to say frozen. It really shouldn't be, but I was so impressed, I actually chose it over a Mini, and have grown to love it more than even my old del Slo. There are times when everything else can be wrong with the world, and I'll go out for a drive, and it'll put a smile on my face...and that is a quality that no other car in the world (from the cars I've driven) has been capable of. So...Ice Cold...and yes, I'm utterly biased, but I couldn't be happier with mine (well some more hp would be nice but still...). EDIT: Btw, I'm going to be on the look-out for something cheap to buy next year...with my own cash. The 3 is still pricey secondhand, which means I'm seriously considering the Protege 5 (the Forester, and Impreza wagon are on the list too). |

I voted cool because for that price, its unbeatable. The engine is great and the interior can be made into that of a BMW. I do however agree with clarkma that the Protege was THEE cheap and economic econobox. It handles great and if you opt for the LX you'll get modest power for price. I will say that the SE's are terribly terribly terribly slow. Slower than the Yaris by miles.

As a Protege ES owner, I gotta say i think it was better than the 3 as well like Clarkma said. I have driven MANY 3s though and i do like them a lot too. I dont think the 3s structural properties are nearly as good as the Proteges. The Protege's handling is simply superb. My vote goes to cool.

Im not a fan of the 5 door body, but I like the 4 door more and don't get me started on the Mazda3 Mazdaspeed!
But I like the last models of the Protege before the line got the axe. I would give this somewhere between an uncool and a cool, just sort of an average car vote but since that is nonexistant I give it a cool. |

Uncool.
It's good for a beginner who is learning how to drive and doesn't want to drive some POS hand-me-down. |

This isn't the econobox cool wall though. This is the absolute cool wall. I mean compair this car to a Group B rallye car and there's absolutely no proximity of cool at all. Fair enough. I'm still sticking to frozen, even though I shouldn't...just because I'm biased and love the damn thing. |

it's not cool.
It's a good car, but really it has no character. Although it does have one of the best shift mechanisms i've ever used, and the clutch is fantastic. If it were the MS3 on the block i'd rate it higher. |

I think it's cool because of its styling and size. It's pretty efficient for its' kind. Also, I should include that I think it's cool because that i'm getting the MS3

More character than a Jetta... ![]() having driven and picked between both, i would have to say i heartily disagree. The mazda just feels like another japanese car with a bunch of gimmicky shit stuck to it. There are positive aspects - mainly the shifter and clutch - but i don't really think the 3 has any character at all. Anodyne engine, overboosted light steering, typical odd japanese styling... i mean compared to a corolla it's very charismatic. but a Jetta has a distinctly German feel to it and there are some quirky elements. I admit the MKV Jetta has less character than the MKIV, but it is still obviously German - everything is solid and "hefty" if you will. I guess i just don't agree with you. The 3 is to me, just another boring small Japanese car with quasi interesting styling ruined by the fact that a bajillion sorority girls drive them. Dull. |
