A redesign of the previous Grand Am, this car was Pontiac's midlevel "compact 'executive' car".
It was built upon GM's N-Body chassis; an old OLD design dating back to 1985.
The chassis is shared with this era's Chevy Malibu, Olds Cutlass and Alero. This Grand Am had a shorter length than
these other models but had a 3" increase in wheel base. The 5th Generation Grand Am has a fully independent
suspension and was available in 5 trim levels - SE, SE1, SE2, GT and the GT1. You could also have it either in a 2 door coupe form
or a 4 door body style.

The SE and the SE1 trims are equipped with a 2.4l twin-cam engine rated at 150hp and 155ftlbs torque.
The DOHC I-4 was replaced in the 2002 model year with a 2.2l Ecotec engine with 140hp and 150ftlbs torque.
Both these motors are plugged into a 4 speed slush box automatic for your driving pleasure. Sorry, no manual was available
in these trim levels. The SE1, GT and the GT1 were equipped with the GM 3400 3.4l V6 which put out a mind blowingly
powerful 170hp (175hp for the GT and GT1) and 195ftlbs of torque (205 for the GTs). The GT and the GT1 were equipped with 4 wheel disc brakes
and until 2003 were standard with ABS and traction control. In the 2000 model year you could get a GT trim with a 5 speed
Getrag transmission.

The Se2 trim was dropped in 2001. Basic amenities such as the stereo system were upgraded this year and halfway through
the model year, the Ecotec four cylinder replaced the twin cam motor. The body paneling was changed so the weird lines patterns
were less obtrusive.... I think?

The Grand-Am Was killed off in 2005 to make way for the Pontiac G6.

Not many postings. I've been a little disappointed with the lack of cool wall participation.

I don't hate this car but it isn't cool. I do hate the ribbed feature on it pre-2002 and I do hate the lack of a manual. Don't worry, I dont think I am going to enter any other model that was sold under the grandam name.

Terrible. Late 90s/early 00s GM was an affront to humanity.

I hate almost everything of GM in the era, until the 06ish model year. I've never seen one of these and thought it looked ok.

That's because the car that replaced it, though not a great bit of metal, looked far better and was a superior product. The g6 is still uncool in spite of it.

I'm digging your Big Libowski avatar. Nihilist? Fucking A, man. Say what you want about national socialism but at least its got an ethos.

I had one of these for 6 years, i thought it was neat when I first got it and was starting to get into cars. The further I got into them, the more I thought of my car being just a bland-ass daily driver. Compared to its gm counter parts (the oldsmobile alero and malibu) its a little bit cooler than those, but still pretty low on the cool spectrum.

Incase you were wondering, I've since upgraded to an altima ser. about as cool as any other big ass fwd sedan can ever be.

The 2.4l is by far the worst engine GM ever made, and quite possibly one of the worst engines made ever.

Heh, we don't get these in Saudi. A friend of mine who'd spent his entire life there, moved back to the States, and was looking for a cheap used coupe. I could've recommended a zillion cooler cars. But he bought a 2-door one, and thought it was the coolest thing ever. He has one exactly like the black one in the last picture. *facepalm*

GM 3x00 engines are horrible all together. But the 2.4l Ecotec isn't bad.

Pretty much disagree with you on that having worked on that engine, tore it apart, and been pretty happy with it for the last 10 years.
But the Grand Am is one of the crappiest cars for the most part and what irked me the most about it was the side scalps or whatever those things were on the beltline of the car.

One thing I can say for the N-body of that era is that the IRS setup from them work great on the J-body to convert it to a irs, the '99 aluminum control arms (produced for only one year-go figure for GM) with modification fit perfectly on the J-body, and the 3x00 can be swapped into the J-body for some nice front heavy go fast in a straight line only ride for the J-body.

Even the the N-bodies knuckles (aluminum) can be used to lighten up the J-body if done right. So to say the Grand Am is useless is an understatement. Raspberry.gif

I think I'll put on my fire protection suit and head out now. firedevil.gif

All in all, uncool.
