A bit of change in my car world...
I had a 2010 STI which was awesome but payments for it were eating up all of my money and it was too modern/nice/expensive for me to A) race it and ![]() Part 0: Sold the STI. Paid 33k, got 29k. Awesome lack of depreciation over 2.5 years and 21k miles. ![]() Part 1: Found a 2005 Saab 92x Linear with a frightening 164,000 miles for rather cheap (like 1/10th of the STI). For those not in the know, it is a base 2005 Subaru Impreza with different badges and various mechanical/styling upgrades. Need to get emissions inspection done (since where I bought it it's not required), probably fix the exhaust, maybe put together a RallyCross set of wheels/tires, and then going here (Summit Point, WV) in March: Part 2: Gotta sell the Tacoma (Dad just got a 2012 Silverado W/T which I can always borrow ![]() ![]() |

Wow...that is pretty good depreciation...either you got it for a steal or there's still lots of demand.

I've got a buddy with a MGB-GT. Actually he just bought another one he wants to do a V8 in. He drives his first one to work regularly and also takes it to some autocross events. Generally older cars are easier to work on but also older = rust, as does your area of the country.
Easy to find and cheap parts means they needed to be made for a car that there are millions of or that fit lots of different cars. Mustang, Camaro, Nova, Falcon, Beetle for small cars. Is the goal a fun street car or what? Historically my definition of fun differs greatly from the bulk of auto enthusiasts' because I think big land yachts are a good time. |

Real photo!
![]() Wow...that is pretty good depreciation...either you got it for a steal or there's still lots of demand. The special editions were a couple grand cheaper than the regular STI, which helped. STIs were very scarce when I bought it but now even though there are a lot more of them out there there still seems to be lots of demand... Here it is if you want to buy it. ![]() I've got a buddy with a MGB-GT. Actually he just bought another one he wants to do a V8 in. Yeah, rust is definitely really bad around here. There seem to be a decent amount of these cars that have been coddled though. I was previously looking with a smaller budget (while I still was paying for the STI) and the situation was bleak. With a more reasonable budget it doesn't seem as bad. By cheap/easy I am comparing the MGB to the Alfa. My idea of fun is the opposite of yours ![]() |

You could do worse than an NA Miata.

You could do worse than an NA Miata. You're talking about the for-fun car? Yeah, I've been seriously considering it. There's a lot of them and they are cheap. The insurance is killer though... I am 25 and I am paying $1300 per year on the Saab, can't imagine adding a Miata to that. Classic car insurance, at least from the quotes I've gotten from Hagerty, is waaaaaay cheaper... Plus, I really want an old car I can tool around on myself. |

After several annoying hurdles like getting the car running, insurance, plates, here she is...
![]() Making a good point to go for a gooood drive every weekend. Awesome! For now I basically just need to get some random lights working and clean up the interior. |

To get it running "simply" required a fuel pump, which I was really happy about since the car had been sitting for 2 years. I had the shop do that for me so I could drive it home, so no pics of that project. Going to try my damnedest to do everything else my self. Fixing up some wiring this weekend... will have to take some pics of that! Or did you want to see something specific?

Post more pics! Congrats on the purchase and I think you made a unique, and fun choice.
My grandfather, who gave me the Karmann Ghia, nearly bought one in '65 but opted for the Ghia because he distrusted MG reliability. Hard call, but I would've gone with the MG. |

Maybe a profile shot of the car. Total lack of pictures is lame, haha... hope to have some pretty ones soon. Here she sits in the garage, working on the rear brakes, want to get them done before driving around more since the right rear is leaking fluid... ![]() Planning wheel painting project. ![]() Interior is probably what needs the most work, but no big deal, focusing on driving-related things. Maybe a better wheel and seats/belts are in order though. ![]() Post more pics! Congrats on the purchase and I think you made a unique, and fun choice. Ghias are cool, you're doing awesome work to it. Reliability, haha... I hear it a lot. It's hard to find a car like this that is cheap and reliable. Even the expensive cars aren't reliable! Are you rallyXing at summit point? Yeah I went to the first event. You been? Haven't been back, really want to. ![]() EDIT: stricken Saabaru... ![]() |

Awesome, I will have to remember to ping you next time I head out there. Saabaru has a new engine, she purrs again. Hopefully this one doesn't CONSUME 4.5 DAMN QUARTS OF OIL IN 3 MONTHS. Good start, no consumption at all and no weird ticks. I'd take a 4wd 3-series wagon if you've got one of those... ![]() |
