Have you looked at craigslist and the classified section at the samba for your parts?

Oh yeah. Some BRMs llike mine were posted there on June 1st and I went down to the seller to check them out but the tires were different. I would've bought them but someone made a down payment.

Not much has changed. I went to the place working on it 3 weeks ago and the guy demonstrated the car to me. It was idling very well, way better than it was this time last summer when I had it in my grandparent's garage. My dad loaned me another thousand and I used it to buy replacement headlights and taillights from Jbugs, a VW parts store in Oceanside, and had them shipped to the garage working on it. The guy working there called about 2 weeks ago to say he received them and that he had all the other parts needed to get the electrics in order. There is still body work which needs doing. Trim parts, door needs to be set flush, the front deck lid needs to be remounted with new springs and hinges and I still want that retrosound headunit.
The shop owner recommended a place to get the interior and top worked on and in another month I will once again have my own money to put into the car.

Thanks! Anyway, its going in for the interior work, finally. I took it to some small time guy in northern san diego for the final touchs on the body work and he has a shop that does interior work for him. All I had to do was go to the internets and find parts. I went to Jbugs in Oceanside where I was buying stuff from originally but there were parts they couldnt supply me with in a reasonable time frame. So I went farther afield. Got the order invoice today, and pending review from the specialists I'm going to dole out a fair chunk of change. This is stuff I absoluetly can't do myself. I can tinker around in an engine bay, but a convertible top would be too much of a headache.

Have you tried comparing the price to West Coast Metric? They are my go-to for these kinds of parts.

I think the convertible top would be the only thing I wouldn't feel completely comfortable doing myself. The seat covers/door panels/interior trim stuff is stupid easy.

I never heard of them before this KG P&R isn't too far north from their store front.

I price matched it with Jbugs in Oceanside and it's about the same price.

Thanks for the lead, Fiber. These guys had a chrome convertible top handle I was having a tough time tracking down. They didn't have the left and right side locking handles which is a bummer but I'll try the samba and ebay for those. As frustrating as it is, hunting down parts is fun in its own way.

Edit: I didn't want to delete my post. They are in the picture of the car at the top of the thread which means I still have them because I still have the top frame with the front bow. Better go cancel my order.

You're welcome. I had fun finding the turn signal switch for mine. Only made from '56-'59. I think somebody makes reproductions of it now but it was fun/frustrating at the time.

Yeah, more stopping power than the thing has engine power. I wish I could say I put them on myself but I wasn't up to the task. I had some experts use some sort of arcane magic to put them on. I really like the wide bolt pattern, with a good set of wheels it gives the car a unique look. I was going to replace the old wheels with reproductions but went with 15" BRMs in matte black. They're prevalent in the VW scene but are unique enough overall that I felt they were worth getting.

I know what BRMs are. I've wanted a set for nearly 17 years now, but I've got 4-bolt axles.

Brought it home the other day with a new transmission and an engine rebuild. I didn't know 38ish HP could be so fun.

It looks great. I've only driven a '59 that was absolutely stock and it was a whole lot more fun than expected.

Thanks. I wish it were a direct product of my labor, but I can take what I can get. Sometime this week I'll find some sunny parking lot to take some pictures for an album.

I've already had an impatient soristitute from the north county get impatient with me, pass double yellows, saluting me as any true selfish Californian would. I don't think it would've mattered what I was driving though in that instant.

Fiberoptic, it's mostly stock. Other than some break tweaks and a freeway flyer transmission and the engine is a whole 20cc larger than it originally was! From here on out, it's my work that will go into it if possible. I've already got to check out the carb because the engine is dying inexplicably at irregular intervals. It takes a day to get up to 60, but the drive is so visceral that it doesn't seem to matter too much.
