Today was muffler day for me:

X-pipe crossover

2.5" Magnaflows, it's a dual system but it's hard to photograph both of them simultaneously.

I had them run the tailpipes in the stock location so it's very stealthy. The sound is slightly more aggressive than stock while accelerating but while cruising at a constant speed it's not very noticeable. I'd say slightly quieter than my truck, at least inside the cabin.

Nice. Have you made a decision on the wheels? Any suspension bits yet?

The wheels is still up in the air. These are the front runners:

The paint color I decided on is Regal Blue Pearl which is a Subaru color. I'm going to discuss that with my painter next week to see what kind of schedule he has.

mmm sounds like everything is coming together nicely. it seems pretty tough to find some decent suspension for the mariner.

There are beefier swaybars and better shocks. Addco for the swaybars and Bilstein shocks were the names I heard, but I'm not familiar with them. I probably won't get too deep into the suspension anyway. The ability to float down the road is part of the appeal, particularly after becoming so accustomed to my truck.

Magnaflow's are about as subtle and smoothe as it gets.

It's hard to believe the same company makes mine:

It's exactly what I was after. I have watched too many videos on youtube trying to get a feel for what it would sound like. And the muffler shop did a VERY impressive job on it, I don't think I could be more pleased with how it turned out.

But while I was under there admiring their work I noticed my differential is leaking. sad.gif

You need a electronic cutout for a open header setup too. whistle.gif

It looks like it's coming from the rear cover.

The seal is probably just a $5 part but I'll also need to put new fluid in which will be more $$ than the dang faulty part.

Well it was in-fact a $5 part but since I had to drop the gear oil I spent about $30 for some fresh.

Here's a little story of how it went:

The stuff I got at Autozone. No idea if that oil is any good though. It's Mobil 1 so I figured it was at least OK, it can't be worse than the decreasing amount of unknown oil that was in it.

Jacked with stand so I don't get crushed by the boat.

Stupid fill plug. It's only 3/8" so my little ratchet doesn't provide much torque to remove it. At least it didn't need some fancy tool I don't have. I ended up pulling my jack and using it as a hydraulic assist to turn it. It worked really well. It's VERY important to remove the drain plug before dropping the oil. Mostly so you still have access to your car in case you need to go get reinforcements or liquid courage.

Ugly 2.73 gears in my rockin' open diff. The oil looked good, no metal particles in it so hopefully I caught the leak in time to ward off any real damage.

No pics of the cleanup because everything was very dirty and I didn't want to handle the camera.

Here she sits all nice and clean and with a warm meal in her belly. It's not puking oil out but I'll probably be paranoid about it for a month. Driving it up to TN this weekend for paint so I'll probably be freaked the whole way there.

Mobil 1 is good, but to my knowledge doesnt have a friction modifier in it. Which is supposed to be added.

As for the gasket, when i put 3.73's in i used gasket seal on the clean surface and that's it. That's what most people do i've come across.

Ford tech: "Instead of using a gasket on the diff cover, use RTV gasket maker. Its easier and works much better. Be sure to clean the area with brake cleaner or carb cleaner to get a good seal."

Edit: Friction modifier is for LSD, an open diff shouldn't need it actually.

I didn't use the modifier because I thought it was only for limited slip diffs. :/

There wasn't a gasket on it, just grey colored silicone. I put a thin layer of curil on both sides of the gasket to hold it in place while I got the bolts started. Cleaned the surface with both brake and carb cleaner because i ran out of brake cleaner.

Curse you and your ninja edit!
