![]() ![]() QUOTE We can't follow where this particular embargo break began, but a pair of official embargoed images of the production 2009 Volkswagen Scirocco scheduled to be unveiled next week at the Geneva Motor Show has hit the interweb. As you can see, the Scirocco's design has changed dramatically from its days on the auto show circuit as the IROC Concept. Gone is the face only a Pokemon master could love, replaced with something more appropriate for public consumption. In fact, the Scirocco will be the first VW we've seen in a while without the double-decker grille treatment. Instead, a slim grille connects its headlamps that are set atop a wide swath of body colored molding before we get to the large lower air intake that also houses turn signals and fog lamps. The basic body shape and rear of this hatchback are, however, much closer to their concept counterpart. Designers were not only able to port over the strong character line that created a broad shoulder down the entire length of the concept, but they even made it more pronounced on the production version by adding a slight crease. From what we can see, the car is lower and wider than, say, an R32 or GTI, which officially makes it the VW hatch we've always wanted and, surprise, won't get. Source: Autoblog Wow, that honestly looks great. |

I'd look forward to it if it was coming to the US, but like everything else cool, I doubt it.

That grill is so odd...much preferred the concept's...
Also, VW fan I may be, I'm not sure how excited I could get about this, even if it did come to the US. It's basically a GTI that's gonna weigh a little less and be a touch more extreme, for a significant price premium. Word on the street is that if it DID come here it would start at an MSRP that would be pushing $30k...hell, $25k's too much for it, nevermind $30k. You can have a real sports car for that money. |

If it went to the US, I'd expect them to price it with a slight premium over the Eclipse and Mustang. So I'd expect a 4 banger to be around $22-23k, and a V6 version might run up to $30...and it better be the R32 hardware at anything like that price.

The longer I look at it the more I like it, although it doesn't look very VWish. I'd like to see a hotter R32-style version.

That's the same/less than the GTI, and the Scirocco's chassis is more exotic. Expect $3k price increases over the GTI/R32 at a minimum. that means $25k to start and $35k+ for a V6. |

I doubt the car will make it to production looking like that. By the time it hits showrooms, I'm willing to bet VAG will put some more branding into its face.

That is the production version, unless I've misread something.

If it does make it to production like this, they will be seriously sorry, as there will be a very very few number of people who recognize this as a VW. I think they'll add some more family styling cues, but we'll have to see!

Who did VW buy this design from? Renault? I think it's going to compete rather strongly with their Golf line up which is the exact same car.

![]() Whoops, I didn't read the entire summary. I thought the concept was due to show at Geneva, not the official production vehicle. In that case, perhaps this vehicle will represent a new styling direction for future VW's . |
