she wants to reinstate the national 55mph speed limit. ARE YOU KIDDING? no one fucking drives 55. even 65 is just "ok". i think our national speed limit should be around 75-80mph.
http://www.nypost.com/news/nationalnews/69045.htm May 24, 2006 -- WASHINGTON - In a surprise move yesterday, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton called for "most of the country" to return to a speed limit of 55 mph in an effort to slash fuel consumption. "The 55-mile speed limit really does lower gas usage. And wherever it can be required, and the people will accept it, we ought to do it," Clinton said at the National Press Club. Before sounding off on the benefits of a lower speed limit, Clinton called for a combination of tax incentives, the use of more ethanol-based fuel and a $50 billion fund for new energy research to cut the consumption of foreign oil 50 percent by 2025. She also pushed for half of all the nation's gas stations to have ethanol pumps by 2015, and for every gas station to have them by 2025. |

Ok.
Wouldn't slower = more time in traffic = more traffic/congestion = more stop'n'go = worst fuel econmy/more pollution = 55mph = 88km/h which is absolutely stupid. |

I whole-heartedly agree with you, but, they don't see it that way. They think that slower traffic = less accidents. That may be true, but, it will take many years to achieve that. People will be used to driving fast, and always will be, so there will be more accidents with this new speed limit. Seriously, fuck those leftist bastards. |

You're lucky if you drive 55 here.
And traffic isn't caused by slow moving cars, its caused by aggressive drivers, and others having to adjust when they get cut off. Generally the slow lane moves better than the fast lane out here, where there is real traffic. In reality, 55 is only 15mph slower than the average 70mph. Unless you're going a LONG ways, that will only effect your travel time by a few minutes, if that. |

It sucks, but a couple things:
1) remember when the speed limit was 55? Nobody obeyed the speed limit. When it was lifted to 65 almost nothing changed, except all of our speeding became more legal. 2) pollution and consumption of foreign-sourced oil are significant issues that I think are hard to ignore. As a car guy it pains me to have to make sacrifices in what I love for the environment, but I've taken environmental chemistry and we know what causes pollution and the evidence behind human-caused global warming is significant and thorough. I do not support lowering the speed limit, mostly because it doesn't work at actually slowing anybody down and just increases the likelihood of tickets and driver stress, but the environmentally aware person in me acknowledges that sacrifices need to be made somewhere because we cannot maintain this level of oil consumption/pollution production and expect to get away with it. At the very least, making sacrifices now makes the transition to low/no-emission fuels and their associated infrastructure less painful. Lastly, 99.9% of the fun you can have in a car doesn't happen on the freeway anyway. |

Sounds pretty shit to me. You could look at it that if they raised the speed limit, people would spend less time on the roads because there journey would be shorter and then they have less chance of being in an accident

Its a very typical democratic outlook of nanny government which I fucking hate and prevents me from ever voting liberal. Yeh, that's the whole premis of a Democratic government: more government figures and less citizens. I believe that a smaller government who let's the people be freer(is that a word?) is much better, especially in the United States. |

instead of lowwering the speed limmit, why not bring in laws against gas guzzling vehicles. Make a law that no car can be sold in the US which gets less than 30mpg on the highway.
That will do significantly more to reduce the consumption of fossil fuels. And incase your planning on arguing that a law restricting the minimum MPG will make it so Americans don't get any of the cool cars...you guys are the largest car market in the world...im sure the companies would adapt. |

30mpg is a pretty high number, leif. What they should do in Canada is to teach spelling more proficiently
