Prank goes wrong
Friday, July 15, 2005 · Last updated 1:00 p.m. PT Boy hit, killed by car after prank turns deadly in Spanaway THE ASSOCIATED PRESS SPANAWAY -- A driver angry that a 12-year-old Tacoma boy was shooting bottle rockets at cars early Friday got out of his vehicle and chased the boy into traffic, where he was struck and killed by another car, authorities said. Witnesses tried to revive the boy, identified by the Pierce County Medical Examiner's Office as Garnet Wilis II. Two men were arrested shortly afterward for investigation of manslaughter, the Washington State Patrol said. The episode happened around midnight near an intersection on Washington 7 in Spanaway, a small town south of Tacoma. Wilis and his 12-year-old cousin had been hiding in bushes and shooting bottle rockets into traffic, trooper Johnny R. Alexander said. A green Toyota stopped, and its passenger got out, chased one of the boys and started beating him, Alexander said. The Toyota's driver made a U-turn and chased the second boy into a nearby parking lot, Alexander said. The driver then got out of the car and continued chasing the boy, who ran onto the highway and was struck by a car driven by a 17-year-old Spanaway girl, the patrol said. Investigators determined the girl who hit Garnet was not at fault. The other boy was treated for injuries and released to his parents. The driver and passenger of the Toyoto fled, but police found them three hours later at homes in Tacoma and Lakewood. |

i dont think he deserved to die for shooting bottle rockets at all, and its kind of sick to say so. thats more a breach of peace misdemeanor and a couple of dope slaps for being so stupid. terribly unfortunate circumstances, all a shame really.

How can you people say that these kids deserved to DIE simply for shooting bottle rockets. Ya it's irresponsible, stupid, and wrong, but to die or get beaten for it. Heaven forbid any of you should ever do something stupid & have to pay the ultimate price for it.

Damn, you guys are acting like dicks...yes, the kid is responsible for the actions that led to his death but how can you gloss over that someone was fucked up enough to beat down one kid and chase the other till he was mowed down by another driver. OVER BOTTLE ROCKETS. What do you think that driver deserves? And for the people saying "where are the parents?", I have to ask if you have ever raised kids? My mom & dad were vigilant and always tried to make sure they knew where I was but I did manage to get into mischief and do stuff similiar to this (setting up road obstacles made out of branches at night...I lived in the country, what did you expect ![]() |

i agree with bing. and kids will always do stupid things. at their age, kids are just starting to get a little wilder, and have more means to do stupid stuff than they did when they were 7. granted it takes some guts to do something so publicly visible, but its just kids being kids. if kids had done this when my dad was younger, no big deal - kids get a good punishment from their folks and thats that. today's society is so over-protective, so paranoid, that people can dismiss this kids as being total recluses, maybe even juvenile delinquints in the making. but that's all crap, and im sure the people who say those things have kids who act up often enough, and did plenty of stupid shit when they were younger. as for their deaths, i dont see how anyone here can say that it was anything other than tragic. in my mind the only crime that warrants the perpetrator's own death, would be murder. to have 2 psychos chase you into traffic is horrible, and i think the charges of manslaughter against them reflect that well.

My car got egged a couple of weeks ago. I was only doing about 35mph, but the egg hit my windshield with enough force to splatter down to the hood and up on the roof. He missed my open window by mere inches. Now, I doubt that any of you here have been hit with an egg or anything of that sort, so I'll spare you the details of how it took a good 30 minutes to an hour to get the car cleaned off completely. I don't care if whoever egged my car was 12 or 20. I got to the next intersection, turned the car around, and parked it on the side of the road where it happened. It was very tempting to go and look for the kid until I found him so that I could beat him into a bloody pulp, but I decided to call the police intsead. I can imagine those guys in the Toyota had the same feeling that I did, but instead of eggs, these kids were using bottle rockets. Now, I've never been hit with a bottle rocket before, but I can tell you that it'd scare the living piss out of me, let alone some 16 year old driver or 70 year old woman who might just have a heart attack if her car got hit. These kids had a blatant disrespect for the wellbeing of those around them and their property, and, while I won't say they got what they deserved, I will say that I've got no sympathy.

You've got to blame the parents in this case, at least a little bit. |

It's pretty dangerous, what if one of those fuckers went into a car window and blew up in the drivers face? Possibly making him lose control and hit other cars and people. Sure, it's too bad the kid die but I can't say he gets any sympathy from me. Here not too long ago a group of kids threw a whole bunch of fireworks into the cabin of a passing semi blowingup in his face completely fucking him up, causing him to run off the road and the truck tipped over. Of course to make matters worse the kids started vandalizing his truck and laughing at him too |
