In terms of fun/mileage rate this would be a sensible decision anyway. 911's have a very good fuel economy.

And the Cayman does even better. The base-engined Cayman admittedly isn'ta straight-line speed demon, though 245 hp is more than enough to have fun with in a petite two-seater. And its 20 mpg city, 29 mpg highway (in the modern EPA test) is damn hard to rival. It's equivalent to a Miata (21/28) and a Civic Si (21/29) and only slightly short of a Mazda3 2.3 (22/29). Shit, it gets the same fuel economy as my car (21/28), and I've got a little 1.8L turbo! When you step back and remember that we're talking about a 2.7L six-cylinder 245 hp RWD car, the company it keeps in the fuel economy department is more than impressive.

If we get away from anecdotal reports just for the sake of keeping things fair between the competitors (I don't know the sort of fuel economy a Cayman driver could get by cruising at 65 mph exactly in top gear), the Corvette is damn good for 400hp, but not better than the Cayman. The EPA test that put the Cayman at 20/29 puts the C6 Vette at 16/26. Not base-engined Cayman numbers, but certainly just as good as a 911 Carrera S (17/25).

And by " the Corvette is damn good for 400hp, but not better than the Cayman." i assume you are referring to the fuel economy part of things.

Yep, that's all I was talking about in the past couple posts--fuel economy. I'm not going to open the Pandora's Box of asking whether a Cayman is a better performance car overall than the Corvette, because the answer is completely dependent on what attributes you're looking for.

I don't know how else you could interpret it, given the context from which you took that phrase.

Porsche fanboism can get pretty extreme around here. More on topic .. i can believe the whole 30+ mpg highway when you are lugging your engine at 70 mph doing <2k rpm. But then again its anecdotal evidence and EPA ratings are pretty close to being pulled out of thin air.

Well, my remarks stem from experience and not fanboism. I went 1000 miles on german Autobahns with an old 996 and gave it full throttle whereever it was possible (yes, that means topspeed). Fuel consumption: 17.5 mpg*. That did impress me a lot. I'm sure the 997 and the Cayman will be even better than that.

* I hope I converted the 13.5 l/100 km correctly.

Porsche fanboyism, like most fanboyism, annoys the crap out of me. I'm a brand slut, not a brand concubine. I am not loyal to any one badge or car.

My remark was not pointed at you. It was just a general comment

I don't really care what a Cayman can do. It's not a 911.

You're right, it's not a 911. The engine is in the right place, and it looks better too. wink.gif History and prestige be damned; I'd much rather have a Cayman than a 911.

The Cayman is a pretty sexy car no doubt, but I don't think it's as beautiful as the 911. A lot of the 911's character lies in the fact that the engine is the back (cliche arugment I know). The truth is it's an emotional thing. I've wanted a 911 before I knew what it really was. I remember being four, and one blasting by us on the road. Dark metallic blue, it was an 80s Turbo with the black Fuchs wheels. I'll never forget it, and I will own a 911 one day. So the Cayman just won't do.

And that's the thing. If you want a 911, a Cayman will always be a pale substitute. I can understand that perspective. But I personally don't have the same positive connotations with the 911 that you do. I've actually got some negative connotations--I think of it as a car driven by people like:

who have no idea how to actually drive it within 60% of its limits, and bought it to show the world that they're important and they've arrived. It's the same negative connotations I have with the BMW 3-Series (the M3 particularly). I like the Cayman because (1) it's dynamically brilliant, (2) it's gorgeous to my eyes, but also because (3) the Bill Lumberghs of the world don't drive them.

EDIT: I probably also like it because, as it says under my avatar, I like girly cars.

I love how perceptions of what you're driving comes up. Who cares if everyone thinks you're an asshole for driving a BMW? They're brilliant cars to drive, and if you enjoy driving them, then it really shouldn't matter should it. (DISCLAIMER: This is a general rant, not aimed at anyone.) Like you said a couple days ago, Mitlov, you wouldn't mind having the clearly inferior Saab Turbo X, just because people wouldn't think you're a douche.

EDIT: There's only one girly Porsche Mitlov, it's the Cayenne. It was designed for soccer moms.
