Just typed the ad name into google and it said 1999 next to it, guess i was older than I thought.

It came out in June of 2008.

Bump.

This was apparently for VW India, where the New Beetle has just launched.

I've been car shopping for 2.5 weeks for/with my girl and every time I've wanted to consider VW's for her I've been disappointed. Plus you can't find one consumer guide anywhere that wont tell you to look at other cars first over pretty much every VW.

My friend's girlfriend was used car shopping between lowish-mileage IS250s and older G35s and stuff and she ended up in a 2009 Jetta 2.5 instead and not only does she love it but I think she got an amazing car for her money. The 2.5 is a torquey, smooth motor that sounds like it has more character than the basically any I4 (and a lot of 6's too), the suspension on 17s is easily as firm as my car's if not a bit more controlled (granted some of my car's firmness has probably been lost since it was new...), the interior is comfortable and high quality and looks brand new after a year of ownership despite the fact that she doesn't make any particularly amazing effort to care for it (beyond the car wash vacuum sorta thing, ya know how most people are). With a full warranty, a VW near the end of its generation cycle is a pretty great buy (that's what I got after all and I certainly never regret it). It's just that they seem to take several model years to work out a new generation's bugs and they're also stripping a lot of what makes the Jetta a nicer car than average out of the MkVI (back to the torsion beam rear suspension, back to rear drum brakes, back to the 2.slow in the base car...)

We ended up finding a Focus sedan only a couple years old w/ 27k miles and still under all its warranties. Was a stupid good deal too, I went through it with a fine tooth comb fist because I kept (still) thinking there must be something wrong with it. Plus open the hood and I can pretty much fix anything under there. Despite German cars scaring me in general, even if you do the labor - it's hard to beat ford parts prices. Plus, it's getting like 31mpg.

And the Ford thing isn't my fault, I tried to get her to get a Civic or even a RSX.

Yeah parts are more expensive than for american cars, then again a new VW has 3 year scheduled maintenance and the few VW owners I know personally don't have issues with their cars...I think their reliability problems are overblown, at least if you research the less problematic ones. Like I said, buy a VW from near the end of the model cycle and you end up pretty golden.

The best ads that VW has done, like the milk one, or the South African one where the guy helps the blind man, are so good because they capture "humanness" so well. They send the message that these are real cars, for real people.

I mean lets look at Honda's cog ad, brilliantly entertaining, but what does it mean to us? VW ads manage to tap into who we are, and that's why we can relate. Their ads are always about people...fitting for the "People's Car" but I guess that's the point.
