The Sierra Cosworth was the start of the "Ford Cosworth" era back in the 80s. It entered the market as a three-door hatch with 200bhp and RWD. In 1987 it got a new four-door bodyshell, and in 1990 a new 4x4 version came out.

The RWD versions had 200bhp stock, while the 4x4 had an extra 20.

When the Sierra range was discontinued in 1993 the cossie lived on as the "Escort Cossie", an Escort bodyshell mounted on a shortened sierra floorpan. The regular european escort doesn't share a single component with the cossie version.

I personally think the four-door sierra is the best looking Cosworth ever. You might think I'm biased since I own a regular (non-cosworth) Sierra myself, but I bought a Sierra myself largely because I love the looks.

Engine: Inline-4, Turbocharged
Power bhp (kW) at RPM: 220 (162) / 6250
Torque lb-ft (Nm) at RPM: 217(294) / 3500

The Merkur XR4Ti is actually a Ford Sierra XR4i, but the merkur models got a turbocharged 2.3 litre thanks to US emissions laws or something. The original XR4i had a 2.8 litre 150hp V6. God knows why Ford named it Merkur for the US market.

The Cosworth versions was a BIT more badass though wink.gif

The nice thing is though that they're the same platform so with an XR4i body you can make your own serra cosworth without having to worry about importation laws.

Yeah... the merkur engine and the cosworth YB is based on the same "pinto" engine block so I guess it's an easy swap.
Mr b00st
it's pretty cool, especially in RS500 form. Much cooler than the dorky escort and fiesta RS Cosworths.

there was a Merkur XR4i at the auction today.. we didn't stick around for it, but they started it up and revved it and it sounded really healthy. Are those any good? specs?

I think I read somewhere that "Merkur" supposedly meant "Mercury" in some language, which must of made some sense to Ford at the time since the Merkurs were sold at Lincoln-Mercury dealers.

They're very related to the Mustang SVO and I mean VERY. The most common mod on a XR4i is a 5.0 swap.
