Megadeus
AMC introduced the AMX/2 styling prototype (the red car) at auto shows in early '69. They liked the design enough to initiate a prototype for a production model, which was called the AMX/3. After AMC learned that Ford and DeTomaso were working on the Pantera, AMC introduced an AMX/3 prototype at auto shows in 1970, a year before the Pantera was introduced.

AMC initially ordered 5 prototypes to be built in Italy, the first being a non-runner due to errors in unit conversions on the drawings. AMC had the AMX/3 tested by BMW and Turin Polytechnic in Europe. BMW said it was the stiffest chassis they ever tested at that time. Speed runs were limited to 160mph due to front end lift. AMC then ordered 5 more prototypes to be built.

Ultimately, the program was cancelled when AMC calculated that the AMX/3 would cost ~$12k in the showroom, compared to <$10k for the Pantera. 4 out of the 5 later ordered prototypes were destroyed in Italy. Supposedly the remaining most complete car was finished in Italy by the builder. Of the 5 prototypes AMC had in the US, the first two exchanged hands multiple times. The last 3 were purchased by AMC's VP of design at the time, Dick Teague. This yellow one was supposedly driven by Teague as his personal car. He even bought the remaining 28 custom built transaxles used in the car from AMC to repair his AMX/3.
