I see this effect quite often with interior shots.

Is there a way to replicate this effect without an actual studio? Hopefully something that can be done DIY.

I would like to add to this. What do you guys use as a white sheet to cover the front windshield when doing these shots. I'd really like to pick one up but I know it's not just a white sheet(too thick).

Select the area and use the gradient fill tool in Photoshop?
