For those that uses Speedlites, how many do you guys use?

Currently for my off-camera lighting setup, I just picked up 3x Canon 540ez flashes. However, I am having issues with one of them and I am debating to even bother replacing it with another one. I still need to buy stands and swivels so one less set helps too

I use 2-4. But its definitely doable with only 2. Only reason I prefer 3 is that you get all sides covered in one shot without multiple exposures.

I often only use 1. Its the easiest for me as I can nail down a shot in a couple minutes with an assistant. I hate light stands. I hate running back & forth to change distance, power, bla bla.

Exactly. For me, using speedlights for automotive photography doesn't make sense. Using small light sources usually results in harsh shadows, ugly spots on the car and not so good lighting all in all. It also slows down your working speed to a point where it is no fun anymore. tongue.gif

I have been only using 1 because I am traveling, and just running around the car like a crazy person smile.gif

Yeah, cos you use a ton of profoto or studio heads instead! tongue.gif

i have three, but usually have an assistand running around with only one, if its daylight he runs around with 2 for more power. i like harsh shadows in exteriour automotive shots. the hotspots and ugly reflectins is just a matter of placement imo.

Ya if I'm honest speedlites aren't the ideal lighting solution for cars, but it can be done and I use them a lot when I travel since it's too expensive and cumbersome to bring the big lights. Here are a few examples of shots I've done w/ only two speedlites...

This is the exact reason why I use speedlights whenever I can. Just for the sheer ease of use & speed at which I can get through shots vs same shots with large lights. Although, that said, I do love breaking out the Innovatronix ExplorerXT & my Elinchroms on location if I need to at least *look* somewhat photographer like. tongue.gif

Sorry for the SUPER delayed response, but when I used speedlites I use them bare, they aren't powerful as-is and any light cut from an umbrella makes them borderline useless unless you shoot wide-open.

in the mean time I did some shoots with the speedlites and from that experience I see how stupid my question was. I never use umbrella's anymore with my speedlites except for interior shots
