Hey guys, firstly just wanted to say hi to everyone since this is my first post.

I'm doing my final project for college (photography) and I chose to base it on cars. I wanted to do a couple of panning shots and ones of me in one car photographing another moving. Pretty similar to these shots:

Please excuse it if they display too big. My question is, roughly what shutter speeds should be used in these shots? Lets assume that the car is moving at 30mph. I've got in my mind 1/40th but I'm not very sure. I just don't want to be experimenting all day when I've actually got the car in front of me.

Obviously I know that there's no magical speed since other factors will be taken into account but at the same time I know it's not going to be 1/500th or 1 sec.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
