Dr. Strangelove
I had an idea as to how we could deal with all these spammers.

Could we lock the new thread function for mew members until they have posted on a certain number of other threads. Or better yet, make them wait a week before an account can post. Something though, this is ridiculous.

^HAHAHAHA

I would agree though we have got to find a stronger way to prohibit spammers.

Or at the very least, appoint a veteran here to moderator and watch for spammers and kick em outta here.

I could do that biggrin.gif
clarkma5
Yeah I dunno why we don't have a more active moderator or admin dealing with it. I was always on top of them, it's not that hard...
BlackJack
Like I said, I'm willing to volunteer to be a moderator and deal with the spammers.
clarkma5
In reality, an administrator is much better equipped to deal with spammers because not only can they stop the user from posting from that account, but they can IP ban and e-mail address ban which leads to a marked reduction in future spammers. Adding just a dozen or so e-mail domains to the ban list cut down spammers here about 90%.
Vadvagool
Clarkma....when did you become not an admin?
clarkma5
Many moons ago, young padawan.
Vadvagool
Wow I missed the boat on that one...

It's part of the reason I was made a mod. Because of time zones, I'm supposed to clean up at times where many of you would be asleep. It's been a busy week for me though, plus I'm still working on DSCOTY...and I didn't catch the fact that the last guy was a spammer.

clarkma5
I asked to not be an admin anymore.

Oh ok, I always thought you were a pretty good admin.
BlackJack
He was and is. I guess he got tired of the admining.

I disagree with what you say, but as Volksadmin I would defend to the death your right to say it!

Leaving the posts intact and only locking the thread isn't helping either.

The spam message is still there for all of google etc to read.

At least delete the whole thread/user

If you lock the thread, then that thread is not visible to Guest Users or Google (only logged in users can view it).

But I agree, the best way to moderate should be to either delete the posts or delete the user with the posts he/she made.

Hi,

Just to let you guys know that I have disabled the signatures for now. I will enable in a short while. I see most of the new registered users are signing up to put the signatures and then leave. I am working to implement a mod that will prevent users from posting signatures until they reach 'x' posts. I would prefer to keep 'x' as 100 posts.

Regards,
Ketan

Would you ever enable signature images for users over, say, 2000 or so posts? It's not 1999 anymore, people have sufficient bandwidth nowadays.

In the past it was more of an issue of uglying up the forums rather than a bandwidth issue.

Agreed don't do it. Pics in Sigs are annoying.
clarkma5
Yeah the pics in sigs things has always been about making the forums not look terrible, it's never been about bandwidth. Even years before DS started in 2003, forums were full of image signatures and it was not an issue with bandwidth. It did make your eyes want to bleed, though.

Fair enough. That makes sense, especially if there are no size/style restrictions. I agree that awful signature pictures are a plague on forum signatures, but it can be okay if people all stick to some sort of standard...
shandyman5
Ketan, signature return soon?
clarkma5
Oh hey didn't even notice they were gone...yeah, what's up with that?

Clark, this is what Ketan posted approximately three weeks ago.

Totally missed it. Thanks for filling me in, though.

I was just using my signature to whore my motor thread. whistle.gif Not that I have any updates or anything. My free time isn't as plentiful as it once was.

I think sigs should return.. never had an issue with pictures in them, and those that put them in usually complied pretty quickly once asked to remove them. Sigs were useful for people to get their work/site out there. I don't generally care, but I know especially in the photography forum, its always nice to see other people's work.

Wish Granted.... Ok, I have modified the code, so now the signatures will be shown only for the users who have more than 100 posts. Sorry that it took so long.
shandyman5
I think we need to modify the form for joining the forum as the Porsche question does not seem to be working.

Are you fucking retarded? This is why our anti-spammer campaign needs to be initiated.
