Introduced in the 2005 model year to replace the Grand Am, the Pontiac G6 was built on GM's
front wheel drive Epsilon platform shared with the Malibu, Saab 9-3, Saturn Aura, Cadillac BLS,
Opel Vectra, Insignia, and Fiat Croma. GM designers went with a more conservative style removing the
ribbed skirting that was given to its predecessor. When the car was introduced in 2005 it was available
in two trim levels the base V6 and the GT. Coming standard with 6 speaker stereo, powered seats, the car
was considered to be very well equipped for its price range. The G6 was a hit selling 124,000 units
its first year on the market and over a quarter million in through 2008.

Both of the first trim levels where equipped with 3.5liter LZ4 V6 pushrod engines which produced
an astronomical 200hp and 220lb/ft of torque connected to a four speed automatic transmission. No
manual was included unless you went with the GT version then a flappy paddle shifter could be had as
an option. The GT came with upgraded stereo system, premium seats, remote start, abs and traction control.

In 2006 GM added two new trim levels and two new body styles. You could now buy a retractable
hard top roof variant. A new trim was added that became the base model with the 2.4liter LE5 I4 ecotec engine
that could produce 169hp @ 6300 RPM and 162ft/lb torques at 4500rpm and this too was stuck to
an automatic gearbox. The 3.5l motor was no only available as an option on the base model but stayed standard
on the GT. The GTP is the other trim made available this year which had The 3.9l LZ9 engine which was equipped with
variable valve timing which gave it 240hp. A 6 speed transmission was stuck to it which was not available on the
convertible which also had its power reduced to 227hp due to a more restricting exhaust system.

In 2007 the more engine changes were introduced along as the addition of standard side airbags. GM
added VVT technology to the 3.5liter engine raising the output to 224hp and the 3.9l V6 became an option on the GT.
A new 3.6liter engine called the LY7 was introduced as an option in the GTP trim level putting out 240hp 6300
and 251 torques @ 3200rpm.
Bored yet? It keeps going!

This same year the GTP was no longer the top level trim as the GXP with more dramatic styling and the
3.9 liter engine became an exclusive convertible option. You could no longer have the GTP convertible as it was pulled
out of production.

In 2009 the G6 4-cylinder sedan was given the 6 speed automatic transmission from the GXP along with a face lift and
redesigned interior. The 4 cylinder engine became an option for the G6 coupe as well.

Production ended in 2009 with the restructuring of General Motors. Pontiac, not considered a core brand was
shut down.

2009 Facelift

GXP Coupe:

There's actually one in my parents' neighborhood, that some white folk brought over from the States. It's pretty inoffensive, and it isn't a bad car or anything. I voted Neutral.
Razor
The GXP coupe is HORRIFYING. So uncool.
dukenukem
Bland piece of cheese. Uncool.
clarkma5
It's a better car than a lot of what Pontiac made before this but yeah still very uncool.

I think this qualifies as one of the few cars that as you look at the faster versions, they get more and more uncool.

So true. I'd be tempted to rate the boring basic rental car models neutral, but then the GXP is just so horribly trailer trash-ey...

Yeah, I wasn't too sure if I should've included the GXP because the performance trim sometimes has a different image then one of the standard trim levels but I didn't want to be bothered with creating another thread for it.

I think the 4 door is one of the cooler 4 doors built by Pontiac but it doesn't have the cool image. This is one of the occasions where I don't see the coupe body style to be any cooler than the sedan. I think the Coupe G6 looks awkward from several different angles. I voted neutral.

I've got a "thing" going here in honor of the brand which was mercilessly cut from GM after it went bankrupt. I'm not going to do all of their cars just their recent ones and some oddball older cars. I may skip the F-Body cars, I will skip the G5. I dont know what to do about the Sunfire since there technically weren't two generations in spite of the fact that it was redesigned and installed with a new engine. I will also skip some of the mid-90s cars and 80s. I've already have the 1st gen Tempest,2nd gen Lemans and the Fiero ready to post barring a court order. I just sort of do a car when I am not doing anything else.

I am sorry but the base rentals are just as bad as the GXP. Maybe not as douchey but just as bad ... and if you compare the G6 to the Impala or the Malibu it loses hands down. Impala .. the perfect rental barge!
moe
I remember my dad and I rented the previous gen model (Impala) some years ago to make the trip from Houston to Austin. It really was the perfect rental barge. Quiet, refined, comfortable.

Ok, in re-reading Clarkma's cool wall rules the GXP coupe should have it's own poll. Sorry. whistle.gif

I was in a parking lot approaching a store and a guy got out of his car talking on his cell phone. He also began walking toward the store ahead of me. As he passed a G6 he actually started commenting on how hot it looked to however was on the other end of the conversation. I think he literally stopped in his tracks and began babbling about the thing. It was a black G6, but that's all I remember except for guy's infatuation with it.

I voted uncool but posted the story anyway because the last pic of the black one reminded me of it.

You have a conceal carry permit right? You should have done the honorable thing and put a bullet in his skull.
