Full Version: share some uncommon music

i figured it would be a cool idea to start a thread where everyone shared some tidbits about music they thought was underrated and pretty non-mainstream, but still awesome. and don't inundate this thread with your posts, no one cares about your musical taste THAT much.

kyuss

kyuss got its start at "generator parties" in the desert. the band would set up, and people would come out of the woodwork and enjoy while they played for hours on end. it was all about fun. these guys seemed remain like that until they broke up, which is very respectable to me. anyways, this music is all about downtuned guitars, psychedelic-influenced brain-jarring riffs, and really just a little bit of everything. i usually am not a fan of metal/hard rock music, but these guys fucking rock. somehow their music sounds like so many things to me, and i can listen to it when i'm in so many different moods. i advise you guys to give them a try, great stuff. if you do download any of their albums, don't start with the first one. here's a sampler:

hope you guys keep an open mind and enjoy. now, show me some cool music!

I don't know how mainstream they are but I really enjoy Los Straitjackets. I would classify their music as surf. They always wear wrestling masks and only address the audience in spanish.

Of course there are many on my list... Sambassadeur, Acid House Kings, and my all time favourite Mojave 3... the one I will recommend is,

Club 8

Club 8 returns in the grandest of ways with their sophomore sixth album. "The boy who couldn't stop dreaming" is pop music at its most profound, balancing perfectly between sunshine and melancholia. Twelve songs that'll make you sing along about death while dreaming of summer days. A glorious return to say the least!

They are on the Labrador Records label which has many interesting artists.
Aircooled
Ulrich Schnauss, he is a German artist. His genre is listed as Electronic, Ambient techno, and Shoegaze in wiki. Interesting stuff to unwind to after hearing the usual rock, pop, rap etc.

One of my many off beat bands I listen to..

One of my favorites of his is called Blumenwiese neben Autobahn.

I also like classical music also. Ludovico Einaudi has a song called Primavera, it is one of the best songs I have ever heard, it was played at the end of the Top Gear episode when they did the american cars. He also has some other great works, such as Fly and Andare.

All these youtube vids are so inferior when it comes to music quality, the real songs sound so much better....

I'll post more later...
Bjorn

A local band that has become a national hit...the Weakerthans are probably one of the best indy bands in the country right now. This is the kind of band I used to go watch at the "all ages" show at Winnipeg's West End Cultural Center.

The Stills out of montreal
duality
uncommon or not, this song rocks.

RallyCat909
I first discovered Cocteau Twins in 1990 as a kid, I have always been a fan of Robin Guthrey's atmospheric guitars and Liz Frazier's angelic voclals, sort of like Enya without all the new age.

This song is Fifty-fifty Clown off of the 'Heaven or Las Vegas' CD.
