Yes, the latest M5 is a beast of a car, with a 500hp V10 on tap, RWD, and dramatic styling. To the disappointment of many however, it's only offered with the SMG semi-auto box, with no manual option as of yet.

But how about taking things down a notch? What about the BMW 550i? While it doesn't have the astonishing 500hp V10 of the M5, with its 360hp V8 it's hardly a slouch. There's also an available M Sport package that'll make it near indistinguishable from the M5 (if it's available where you live), and something the M5 doesn't have...a manual transmission.

No, it's not quite as fast or involving, but it offers a manual, the option of a versatile estate (if it's available where you live), and it's usefully cheaper. Still want that M5?

I don't like the new M5, the previous one is a hundred times better. I took in on the highway and the sales lady told me to drop it in second/third (forget which one, second would make sense) and floor it. I was going at 60 and then a beeping sound went off, I was doing 100mph and didn't feel a single thing. The car rides very smoothly, you can't feel the acceleration at all.

The clutch has to be the smoothest clutch I've ever used as well, it was very easy to use. That car is really one of those that you would enjoy driving every time you got in.

I hate the new 5-series in general! I'd rather take the M5 because it's more exciting, but I'd rather shove both of them over a cliff.

I love the new 5 series...I think its one of the most interesting designs out there today.

Infact I don't think there is a single Bengal design which I really hate (unless he was responcible for the SUVs...they are ugly!)

I was kinda disapointed by how un-Bengalish the 3 series was, considering how much I liked the 5,6 and 7 series efforts.

Personally, I'd get a 550i with a manual and a sports pack, or M-sport, or whatever was available where I lived, and use the left over cash on something like a Miata.

Why do I not believe a single thing you post? You're barely 18, no BMW dealer would let you drive a base model 330i let alone an M5

I wasn't a huge fan of the new M5 at all, that is, until i saw one in person and had a chance to take it in up-close. It is quite a machine to behold and made me want one - bad. This is an interesting comparison, however, and it made me seriously consider the choice you have posed, moe. Although you're right that the 500hp V10 is hard to turn down against a lower hp V8, i find myself not being able to ignore the appeal of a true manual transmission and a VERY significant gap in the prices between the 550 and the M5. The performance figures, however, are the opposite. A 5mph slower top-speed and just shy of 1 second slower to 60, both in addition to a 210lb lighter vehicle overall make the 550i the car I would choose if given the option. Obviously, the larger torque figure, V10, and higher HP # of the M5 make it tempting, and the quad pipes on the rear are truly a work of art to behold, but the exterior of both are quite comparable, and dare i say the 550i may even be better looking than the M5 in my opinion as well. Basically, the pros of the 550i vs. the M5 make the 550i impossible to turn down in my opinion, especially if it means i keep nearly $23k in my back pocket and my hand happily grasping a true gear stick of a fantastic 4.8L 360hp luxury sports sedan by BMW.

sealed.gif: He did mention that he was driving the previous generation (E39) M5.

As for choosing between the M5 and the 550, the only reason I'd ever drive/consider owning an E60 Bimmer is for the engine in the M5.

I asked that on Clarkma's thread...this is a 5-series only thread. Would you rather have the all-conquering M5, or the quite-fast-enough 550i and a lot of extra cash left over?

I'll take the 550i. Avaliable with a proper gearbox, $30k cheaper and only 1 second slower to 0-60 but still BLAZING fast. I'll use my extra $30k to get an Elise and have a proper sports car

I drove the previous model.

Cyclone - Drop me a PM or IM sometime and we can talk about that if you'd like. I have no doubt that I can prove to you that a dealership wouldn't let me drive a car like that, it's not really as hard as you might think, probably even easier in Indiana. Dress a little decently, act confident, make a firm handshake, and get down to the point. Too many people tell some long story, try to dress very nicely, drive up in a nice car, make talk about the specifics of the car, etc. and that's probably all the exact opposite of what you should do. You don't have any idea about my accomplishments, people I've worked with in business, and where I'd like to end up. If you know even what I've just done so far, you'd have no doubt that test driving pretty much any of these cars isn't an issue at all.

I considered the Quattroporte in my thread, but its MSRP puts is about 50% over the S6 in terms of price and still nearly 40% above the E63 (which was the most expensive car in my poll), so I dismissed it.

Why are so many people voting M5? I'm not so much suprised as just curious to hear the reasons people have in favor of it (which i know there are several)

Because the 550i is ugly, deeply flawed, AND boring. At least the M5 is only ugly and deeply flawed.

Yeah, 550i replaced 540i...I just waned a 5-series with the M-Sport package...they all look the same.

I know there are a danish tuner shop that puts superchargers in the 540 and 550 to make it even more powerful than a M5, but still cheaper, so I could imagine that this is probably done in many countries as well.

But I still think I'd go for the real M5, 'cause i just hate those poser cars that are upgraded to look like something they aren't. Like a WRX with STi badges and all, or a 540/550 looking like a M5.

Yeah, I wouldn't say that the 540 is boring at all either - not as fun to drive as the M5? without a doubt, but it would still be a nice car that can be enjoyed

I chose the M5 because it is now available with a true manual, standard. For the past year the 550i was my choice, but as of model year 2007, the real M5 is back.

thumbs_up.gif I feel the same way. Bangle really killed the look of most modern Bimmers. The last gen M5 was a gorgeous piece of rolling office space, but in terms of looks, this is a German Pontiac. I don't care how well it performs, for that price, I want a hot body, too.
