U.S. model engine lineup -
* 2.0 L (122 cu. in.): 148 bhp (110 kW), 135 lbfft (183 Nm)
* 2.3 L (137 cu. in.): 160 bhp (119 kW), 150 lbfft (203 Nm)

0-60 for the 2.3 manual was 7.4-8.0 according to official sources, but the 2.0 Sport with the automatic did 9.0. As a note, it was the third best selling car in Canada.

My take? A weak sequel to the cool Protege. The automatic model I drove felt anemic, and shifted slower than molasses in January. But, crappy transmission aside, it wasn't too bad. Power was decent for the 2.3, interior was nice, gauges were cool. Just make sure you get the manual.
clarkma5
I remain bitter that the 3 is not as good to drive as the Proteg it replaced. Uncool.
moe
I maintain, that you are wrong Clarkma. I learned to drive on Proteges, and loved them, but they lacked the 3's composure, and all-round ability.

As for the 3? I want to say cool. It handles better than most cars in this class, is stylish, and very important for a car of this class...never reminds you that you're in fact driving an econobox.

But...I'm going to say frozen. It really shouldn't be, but I was so impressed, I actually chose it over a Mini, and have grown to love it more than even my old del Slo. There are times when everything else can be wrong with the world, and I'll go out for a drive, and it'll put a smile on my face...and that is a quality that no other car in the world (from the cars I've driven) has been capable of. So...Ice Cold...and yes, I'm utterly biased, but I couldn't be happier with mine (well some more hp would be nice but still...).

EDIT: Btw, I'm going to be on the look-out for something cheap to buy next year...with my own cash. The 3 is still pricey secondhand, which means I'm seriously considering the Protege 5 (the Forester, and Impreza wagon are on the list too).
porschedream
I voted cool because for that price, its unbeatable. The engine is great and the interior can be made into that of a BMW. I do however agree with clarkma that the Protege was THEE cheap and economic econobox. It handles great and if you opt for the LX you'll get modest power for price. I will say that the SE's are terribly terribly terribly slow. Slower than the Yaris by miles.
infinity
As a Protege ES owner, I gotta say i think it was better than the 3 as well like Clarkma said. I have driven MANY 3s though and i do like them a lot too. I dont think the 3s structural properties are nearly as good as the Proteges. The Protege's handling is simply superb. My vote goes to cool.
UserDrew
Im not a fan of the 5 door body, but I like the 4 door more and don't get me started on the Mazda3 Mazdaspeed!

But I like the last models of the Protege before the line got the axe. I would give this somewhere between an uncool and a cool, just sort of an average car vote but since that is nonexistant I give it a cool.
Tirminyl
I give it a cool. I like it and am impressed with it, so I gave it a cool.
DakianDelomast
This car has nothing cool about it. Its just a good car. Not a cool one.

It's cool amongst its kind...econoboxes.

This isn't the econobox cool wall though. This is the absolute cool wall. I mean compair this car to a Group B rallye car and there's absolutely no proximity of cool at all.
z0ne
Uncool.

It's good for a beginner who is learning how to drive and doesn't want to drive some POS hand-me-down.

Fair enough. I'm still sticking to frozen, even though I shouldn't...just because I'm biased and love the damn thing.
Mr b00st
it's not cool.

It's a good car, but really it has no character.

Although it does have one of the best shift mechanisms i've ever used, and the clutch is fantastic. If it were the MS3 on the block i'd rate it higher.

More character than a Jetta... tongue.gif
clarkma5
it's on the same plane, moe. they're both nothing special.
dukenukem
Uncool. Its not a Mazdaspeed and its no different from a Civic or a Gaytta
Cyclone
The 5dr version in white is pretty hot. I'll vote cool because I almost bought one
BlackJack
I think it's cool because of its styling and size. It's pretty efficient for its' kind. Also, I should include that I think it's cool because that i'm getting the MS3 smile.gif

having driven and picked between both, i would have to say i heartily disagree.

The mazda just feels like another japanese car with a bunch of gimmicky shit stuck to it. There are positive aspects - mainly the shifter and clutch - but i don't really think the 3 has any character at all. Anodyne engine, overboosted light steering, typical odd japanese styling... i mean compared to a corolla it's very charismatic.

but a Jetta has a distinctly German feel to it and there are some quirky elements. I admit the MKV Jetta has less character than the MKIV, but it is still obviously German - everything is solid and "hefty" if you will.

I guess i just don't agree with you. The 3 is to me, just another boring small Japanese car with quasi interesting styling ruined by the fact that a bajillion sorority girls drive them. Dull.
infinity
100 bajillion sorority girls drive jettas though.
Mr b00st
yeah, ok, so it's not a good point.

but the 3 is still generic, japanese, and dull.
infinity
then the jetta is generic, japanese, and "cute"

Exactly. Uncool for being a slow FWD grocery getter with sporting aspirations.

a Jetta isn't Japanese, nor does it feel or look Japanese. The best argument is one supported with experience with the topic at hand.
infinity
i meant german...

No, it definately looks Japanese...on the outside.
Mr b00st
oh, whatever. No, it doesn't. Not nearly as prototypically japanese as a 3.
infinity
It does look just like a corolla though :-\

Boost chill, I'm just screwing around. I honestly don't think either of us have a better car than the other. They're both pretty much on a level playing field. In the end you chose the Jetta over the 3, and I chose the 3 over the MkV Golf (the new Jetta has yet to be released in the ME). It was personal preference.

You're both biased towards your own respective cars which you own.

Obviously there will be some catfights thrown in between.

point me to one similar styling cue. or even proportion. Something.

There's nothing cool about this gutless economy car. Uncool vote cast.
