The tensioning is done by the generator pulley. It's two seperate pieces that when placed together have a V-groove profile. Shims are removed from between the two pieces that allows them to sit closer together and the belt rides higher out on the pulley.

It's actually a pretty ingenious idea. Its easier to appreciate the German engineering if you work on one yourself. Unlike conventional tensioners there is nothing to fail...
