Full Version: Peugeot kills the GTi

This will probably have little bearing on the North Americans here, but I think this is pretty sad news. Peugeot has decided to axe its infamous line of GTis (RCs in many parts of the world) in favor of the RCZ. This is from the brand that's built some of the best hot hatches in history (admittedly the most recent 207 GTi/RC had none of sparkle of GTi's of old).

Here's a tribute to some of their best:

205 GTi

106 GTi

106 Rallye

306 GTi-6

306 Rallye

On the last picture the wheels have obviously been photoshopped.
McKhaos
I havențt seen a GTI Peugeot in fucking ages.

I see the 206 and 207 everywhere I go, but they're hardly the best of their breed.

It's kind of a shame, but they were killing the GTi name with the later models anyway.

lol that title made me think that Peugeot made some VW GTI killer... but this is bad news indeed.

I've still found nothing to replace my 106 GTI*

I don't like the fact that it has the structural rigidity of a paper bag should it come to a crash – especially as my wife and my daughter drive it. But what else weighs under a tonne, seats five (legally) and has the constant get-up-and-go enthusiasm of a terrier to attack a series of curves? It also has sweet steering, great brakes and a perfect manual 5-speed box. As for the handling: there was once a Top Gear special about the best handling car in the world:

Watch and be surprised:

At a "Snow and Ice" event, where I got 2nd fastest time of the day in the fwd category – on winter tyres and 106 Rallye steel rims:

On summer tyres and stock alloys:

My wife and daughter both prefer the Pug to the Smart Brabus Roadster-Coupé.

*Mini Cooper S is far heavier and only a 4-seater (my girls are out tonight with 5 in the Pug). Ditto for The Fiat/Abarth 500. The Renault Twingo Cup gets near – and maybe the upcoming Polo GTI will – though both are heavier, so I'm anything but sure...

I was about to recommend the 500 Abarth and the Twingo RS. There's also the Suzuki Swift Sport, and the Panda 100HP (not as hardcore, but practical, and supposedly very entertaining to drive).

EDIT: Also, Alfa MiTo? I love the sub-hot hatch segment. It's one of my favorites, and all the cars seem pretty awesome.

I love the color. Just wondering, where do you live speedy? I'm assuming Europe.

The Swift is a bit heavy and the Panda 100HP is only available as a 4-seater (ridiculous) – and my wife and daughter hate the looks , though I find its "functional" look appealing. MiTo doesn't seem to be getting the best reports...

Would you believe Switzerland? This is the Klausenpass where I wrote off my Speedster sad.gif – and immediately went out to replace it with the Exige biggrin.gif

I assumed it was somewhere north biggrin.gif

Here's a comparison of the Twingo Cup, the Swift Sport and a Fiesta. None of them seem to hit the balance of comfort (supple ride, air con, leather/alcantara, etc.) and sparkling performance with light, precise and nimble handling of the 106...

You can see me maltreating it here. The last few minutes is driving on the public road on the way home. You can see why we use winter tyres!
