Canon EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM? or Canon EF 17-40 mm f/4L USM?
This is going on an XTi body btw.

It depends on what you'll be using it for, but faster glass is almost always the best buy, so my vote goes for the ƒ2.8.

Depends on what you shoot and what your plans are for the future.
I got the 17-40 on my xsi and loved it. Its the equivalent of 24mm on a full frame. Which is still pretty wide.
I got the 17-40 because I didn't need it to be fast and I planned on going full frame in the future.
