I never read the books but it was pretty obvious that the overall feeling was pretty there. The characters and experience were top notch. On the other hand it was kinda artsy in the fact that it lacked any clear moral or direction. Stuff kinda just happens in the film and then it ends. He's a unique and troubled boy, he goes away, he is unable to reconcile the things' problems or makes them worse, then he goes home and hugs his mom. I mean I guess he achieved a perspective on how his former habits were unfair to those around him or how destructive, non-functional they are but it's not really highlighted in any way.
