Well, I have finally purchased a proper car. It is a bone stock NA6 MX5. Pics (not mine):

Plans, roughly in order, are:
-wheels
-intake
-suspension
-exhaust
Then I think I will sit happy for a while
Looking to do a few trackdays with it. Nothing too serious, just something for shits and giggles.

Good call on the color. Paulie D had one too, and he modified it very tasetefully. I highly recomend some Minilites for it.

You bastard that's what I want. Also if you are doing trackdays, you need a proper roll bar. Look into Bethania's Hard Core bars and do be sure to get the padding that goes with them:

I dont recall his one? pics?

I looked for them, but couldn't find them. His car basically started off the same as yours, but he added a bunch of aesthetic pieces that really brought the car to life. He had some Minilites (which you sure as hell better be getting), he had aluminum roll hoops, various tasteful aluminum trim pieces for the interior, a front lip, and I remember it being lowered slightly (though I could be wrong). All-in-all, I think it was pretty much the best looking Miata I've ever seen.
EDIT: I found an old post of Paulie D's over at Canadian Driver, but the pics were uploaded on to Cyclone's old uploader and don't work any more. Here's the
thread anyway.

Tragic. Wow, the similarities are uncanny; both blue, both 90s, both 88k on clock.
Okay, I am looking at getting roll hoops and a front lip spoiler. Wheels I'm still looking for. Ideally I want some SSR MKII or MKIII but they are rare as hens teeth down here. I have also found some Gram Lites 57 in 15" form that I am looking into.

I've decided to hang out for some 15x7.5 SSR Mk2's, and then paint the centers bright orange I think.
In the meantime, first mod:

I am jsut about to order a roll bar. After that I will be getting coilovers. Decided to leave the lip until I get stance sorted.

READ UP ON MIATA SUSPENSIONS BEFORE YOU BUY ANYTHING. There is a huuuuuge body of knowledge, do not buy blindly! Read Miata.net's FAQ and suspension forum as a bare minimum. Miatas are tricky beasts and require a major focus on bump stops which is not true of most cars, and there are other tricks as well, including major concerns about suspension travel (particularly in the rear) and chassis bracing.

So got a new set of wheels finally; SSR Type C's in 14x6 +30. Also picked up a set of lowered springs and pedders shocks for almost nothing off a forum member. Was told they are 2-3 inch lower, but I don't think they are lower than 1" from standard. Getting them fitted was a bitch, ended up giving up and cashed in a favor to get them on.

Front is sitting reasonably

Rear is still 4WD height

Also just about to pay for a Torque Box roll hoop, which should be pretty cool once arrived and fitted. Should fix up the flex when the top is off as well, which would be amaze, as it is pretty shocking.

Six spokers in 15" look best on the early Miatas for some reason. It's a good thing those springs didn't actually lower the car 2 to 3", the Miata is already a car in desperate need of suspension travel.

to which i may add, buy some P21s Wheel Cleaner Gel.
its safe on all metals/finishes and is PH neutral. you can let it sit on the wheels for up to 2 hours to let it dwell and then agitate with a stiff brush.

Too bad they're 14s... but because they're 4x100 deep dish (2 piece?) SSRs makes them sex.

yeh, its harder than fcuk to get tyres for them, but they are just so rare i really dont care. Yes, they are 2 piece. Gonna get the Type C's powdercoated and use them as track rims

Tires for those... 195/45/14 Toyo T1Rs.
Do it.
mitch_f1
Sep 7 2009, 04:48 PM
So I went and got some Hankook's in 195/60/14 all round, cause they were the cheapest, and no one had anything much bad to say about them when I called around, unlike most of the other tyres I was looking at. I'm a bit worried about 2 things; 1) it's not in the guards, and 2) the height, and seeing that I'm not overly keen on coilovers, and I don't want to scrape on everything, I dunno.
One and a bit problems arised; one of the front rims is badly warped, and so it will need re-rolling (where do I go?), and a rear is a bit warped, but was still able to be balanced. So the wheels can't go on just yet

Also took me and my dad a solid 1 and a half days to put this in; a Torque Box roll bar from MX5Plus.

Hex, I would get sexy grippy tyres, but Im going to keep the Type C's on there, cause they are feather weight ( <4kg), and use them as track rims...these are comparatively heavy at like 5kg a corner, plus the wider rubber adds weight.

uhhh...
I'm sorry, but you made the SSRs go from smoking hot to hilariously awkward. It looks like an off road vehicle now, those tires are several sizes too big.
195/50/15 would've been a properly fitting tire by all standards, I'm really not sure why you chose to go that route, as they negate any aesthetic appeal the wheels were making in the first place.

yeh okay, well the options were 195/60/14 or 195/60/14 NO-ONE makes anything with less profile than 60 for a 14 inch rim...not in Australia at least. i must have called around 10 or 15 different tyre places, none of them had anything less than 60. yeh it's a bit high, but I'm getting some lower suspension from Melbourne in the next couple of weeks. At any rate, I can't use the wheels until I get the warped rim fixed.

okay, so ride height not yet fixed, but I had a lil pressie arrive this morning, it starts with A and ends with RC

Came with a stainless steel heat shield...FTW

Took me farking forever to get the darned OE one out, as I realized i had to take a fan out to get the massive thing out, but yeh. It's in. I'm a bit disappointed with the sound it makes; not nearly as loud as I would have hoped, and I can't notice much of a difference in power, like at all, but meh, I helps the engine breathe a lil better now.

ARC is beautiful but fucking useless. your probably better off with a BPi Flowstack and a K&N Cone on the stock MAF

after searching the miata forums ive discovered
"FWIW, I have dyno tested the 1.6NA version ARC intake on my 91' JDM car. I got about 4 more hp at the wheel after maximising both fuel and timing using Apexi piggybacks. The downside was a slight loss of mid range torque and some really crazy A/F ratio fluctuations around 4500rpm IIRC. The driving experience was pleasingly different but in the end I went back to the stock unit as I wasn't comfortable with the A/F ratio fluctuations (which could not be smoothened out with my SAFC-II). The ARC intake is a very beautifully made product".
looks like you are probably better off with the stock system with a nice filter replacement and maybe some swiss cheesing.
