I always thought the Protege was a good looking car...and I have been told that they drive pretty well. My favorite of the bunch was the Protege 5, such a good looking wagon, and it was a contender when I bought the Impreza, which won out due to AWD. I was also rather enamored with the Mazdaspeed Protege...

Somthing along the lines of a Legacy or Wrx

Shame you didn't get into an ES (or better yet, a Mazdaspeed) but regardless Proteges are really great cars.

Only proteges to get rear discs were ESs and Mazdaspeeds, so he's got drums (as well as 4-lug hubs as opposed to 5 and the softer suspension).
The sad thing is my '05 Mazda3 still has dumbs...
Bjorn
Feb 1 2009, 09:03 AM
I've often wondered why manufacturers still use drums. They are an order of magnitude more complex than discs from what I can see, and I would assume take more time to make and install on the car. I wouldn't be surprised if disc brakes are cheaper for a manufacturer than drums.
Personally, if I were looking at two similar cars, and one had drums I would choose the one with discs every time.

For the budget I had, this was the perfect match.
I payed 3900$ (canadian)
I kept looking at the Mazdaspeeds (because I love them oh so much) OR a mazda 3
But the speeds where goiing for wopping amounts. 14 000$ is the lowest I found.

DRUMS

Is it really complicated to switch to disks?
Is it expensive?
clarkma5
Feb 1 2009, 01:47 PM
Probably pretty complicated, seeing as how it would involve a swap to the 5-lug hubs, which probably means you need to do the front hubs and brakes to match. Also probably not particularly worthwhile on a front wheel drive car that only has tiny rear discs anyway.
DrDevil87
Feb 1 2009, 08:49 PM
Guess it aint really worth it.
I'll just paint the drums + front calipers the same color.
or something like that
clarkma5
Feb 1 2009, 11:31 PM
Or you can not bother because it's an economy front wheel drive sedan. It's a good economy front wheel drive sedan, but still. Don't be a douche who paints their brake drums (I HATE that).

you guys are right....i need more power now......my next will be an WRX or Ralliart
hm...for the Enkei.....i would get 16" to get you a bit more "air cushion", 205/40, that's like running with almost no air chamber (exaggeration). especially we live in Montreal where pot holes are a huge problem.....Montreal = Pot Holes!

make sure the offset is right and doesn't overstrain the bearings.....just my opinion....but ya...i know there is a lot of ppl putting 17"

Update
So I'm not sure about the drop-rims-etc anymore.
As much As I love my new little car. And I love driving it, the mags and drop would cost me lots of $.
And that $ I can put it into better lenses or a better camera body, especially that I'm getting a bit more serious about Action Sports photography and Motorsports photography....
Damm
I wish I made more $

I'll see what I do. If I do anything with the car

I'd hold out hopefully for a new RX-9

If it's based of the Mazda Furai concept car it should be a beauty. It sounds like Mazda's going to try the rotary engine in a couple more cars in their lineup. They've also changed the engine dimensions slightly to get better low end torque out of the rotary engines. That should alleviate some complaints from skeptics and rotary haters.
