Ok, I finally got around to doing something silly like this (inspired by bankieWRX, although not nearly up to his quality levels.)
This was just a test run so I took my Olympus, which is a camera meant for stills but has an ok movie mode instead of my camcorder which is a pain to work with. Unfortunately, the audio's horrible because the microphone on the Olympus is so sensitive that even the noise of the engine causes it to cut out (in an effort to save itself) and then the second it cuts out, it thinks the noise is gone so it comes back, and the cycle repeats...so the audio pulsates (which is annoying) but the video clip in question is so short it isn't that annoying. The purpose of this outing (of which you only see about 20 seconds) was also to test my tripod arrangement, shown below.
Anyway, here's my little video (12 megs):

EDIT: The .mov I put up originally was fecked; there is now a shiny new .avi that works.

I wish I had thought to hook up my camera when I went down highway 25 6 weeks ago. My 130 MPH antics would have put you in your place, young'n.

yea, 130 will be a thing of the past once i find a safe road to test the governer...

WRX has no governor, I thought. My understanding was that it was gearing limited to 140. (my brother claims he's hit 136 in his.)
BankieVR6
Sep 12 2003, 06:48 PM
i was under the impression it was limited to 135, but capable of low 140s
clarkma5
Sep 12 2003, 06:50 PM
Well, if it is limited to 135, then the "low 140s" would most likely be explained by speedometer inaccuracy. Speedometers always read fast.

well, we'll just have to find out, now wont we?!

if im not back in an hour, call the police!

"Hello? Can you let my friend bankie out of jail? yes, I know he was going double the speed limit but..."
BankieVR6
Sep 12 2003, 06:56 PM
double? the best road to do it on around here has a limit of 35...
clarkma5
Sep 12 2003, 06:58 PM
I was thinking the freeway with a speed limite of 65, even though that's the dumbest place to do it.
The place where I hit 130 was in the middle of absolute nowhere. I drove for an hour or two at legal speeds to get to a place where I could hit the limiter.

how stable was that tripod?
clarkma5
Sep 12 2003, 07:15 PM
Quite secure; I was suprised...all I did to secure it was wrap the seat belt around one of the legs and the only time it would budge would be if I went around a right hand turn fast...I imagine if I got more creative with how I secured it it would be foolproof.

i found duct tape worked well, i got up to 80 with the handycam duct taped on my hood just behind the scoop, and it was stable.

clarkma, were your windows open during that clip?
clarkma5
Sep 12 2003, 07:18 PM
Yeah, well, I'm too careful about my car to risk getting tape residue all over stuff.
clarkma5
Sep 12 2003, 07:19 PM
To 5liter: yes my windows were open; but I closed them later and I got the same audio issue. It's just the camera's oversensitive microphone that causes that "helicopter effect" -like sound.

is there anyway to connect an external mic, just wondering, i have no idea
clarkma5
Sep 12 2003, 07:25 PM
Not on my olympus, but I can on my canon...but that doesn't need it because its microphone is better.

wow, the mic sucks and the video quality is terrible. hehe
clarkma5
Sep 12 2003, 09:57 PM
Yeah; the camera isn't made to take movies...it just has a movie mode and it's much much much easier to get movies off of this camera than off of my camcorder (keep in mind this was just a little test run)
Sometime in the next couple days I'll try it again with the camcorder.

Unbelievable!
Somebody else that actually came to a full stop at a stop sign! Lately the people blasting through stop signs has seriously been pissing me off
I was wondering why the sound was so patchy as I read in another thread you had some nice camcorder. Didn't realize you were using the digital camera.
clarkma5
Sep 13 2003, 10:13 AM
Yeah, I was using my camera that wasn't meant for taking movies (the 5 megapixel Olympus that just has a movie mode) and its microphone is so sensitive that it cuts in and out, causing the sound to pulsate...and the camera's original video is only a 320x240 15 fps quicktime movie, so that explains the poor video quality.

Ah the sound of a turbo veedub. I think that sound will be ingrained into my memory forever. I used to work at a dealership for them. Just out of curiousity when you launched you just trompted the gas right? The turbos spool so quick in those that you get a nice hunk of low end torque.
clarkma5
Sep 13 2003, 10:31 AM
Yeah, I just floored it...no torque-braking or anything. It's a tad slow right off the line, but by the time you hit 1800 RPMs it's turbo time and everything just goes.

hehe my Canon digital cam gets really good videos. It's too bad that 640x480 is limited to 30 seconds though.
