My latest little rant comes in the form of a new turbo system.

http://ststurbo.com/

Basically instead of mounting the turbo next to the exhaust ports they take it and mount it all the way in the back of the car. I think its a HORRIBLE idea because the exhaust tempurature and velocity at the end of the pipe ruin the effiency of the turbo and the lag must be absolutely out of this world.

I've seen these quite a few times. And their becoming popular on fbody's due to the tight engine bays.

I saw one that made crazy power. And was really efficient. I'll try to get you a link w/ details and dynograph.

Till then, http://thirdgen.org/techbb2/showthread.php...threadid=238864

This guys 89 cavalier z24 broke into the 13's at only 13psi (ran low 16's prior to turbo) with an inexperienced fwd driver and very minimal other mods. You can read the thread, nice improvement I say.

Awful idea. Can you say "lag"?

Do you have compairison of a proper setup? And the dyno tells you nothing about lag either.

Comparisons tough to make or find. I'll say you can probably only get so far with one of these..

But they make an easy, and pretty well working solution.

On an Fbody for example to run a proper turbo, you need shorty headers to accomodate room in the engine bay while Long tube headers yield quite bigger gains as far as headers go on an LT1. So say you were to have the same setup with a proper setup, and then the rear mount they could be made pretty equal, until you push it past whatever point it becomes a real disadvantage.

But I mean for the gains I think it's a nice product. A simple 4 hour install, as opposed to tearing into an Fbody's engine bay. On smaller cars I could see this being not as good an option though. I'm not going to argue it's not perfect as their is already the first option that works better (tough to determine how much). But for an easy 100hp at low boost, I beleive the lags not that bad on this car, and it's a pretty cool idea.

Might be a nice little "niche" market product. I think on some cars like Forrest pointed out it would make sense, like the FBody mustangs

its interesting in the way those electrically driven superchargers are interesting... it will never be mainstream but it's a captivating idea nonetheless.

This is probably a really stupid question but i was wondering why there's lag with turbochargers and how this sepcific type increases the lag? huh.gif

A turbo has to spool up to produce the power. The time it takes for the turbine to spool is the lag, a bigger turbo is harder to spool up thus creating more lag.
