The Tata Nano is a rear-engined, four-passenger city car built by Tata Motors, aimed primarily at the Indian market. The car is very fuel efficient, achieving around 78mpg on the highway and around 92 in the city. It was first presented at the 9th annual Auto Expo on 10 January 2008, at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi, India.[4] Nano had a commercial launch on March 23, 2009 and ,a booking period from April 9 to April 25, generating more than 200,000 bookings for the car.[5] [6] The sales of the car will begin in July 2009,[7] with a starting price of Rs 115,000 (rupees), cheaper than the Maruti 800, its main competitor and next cheapest Indian car priced at 184,641 Rupees.[8][9][10] Tata had sought to produce the least expensive production car in the world[11] aiming for a starting price of Rs.100,000 (approximately US$2,000 in March 2009).[12][13]

In early 2008 the news magazine Newsweek identified the Nano as a part of a "new breed of 21st-century cars" that embody "a contrarian philosophy of smaller, lighter, cheaper" and portend a new era in inexpensive personal transportation and potentially, "global gridlock".[14] The Wall Street Journal confirmed a global trend toward small cars, which includes the Nano.[15]

"Nano" means "small" in Gujarati[16], the language of the founders of the Tata Group. In English, the prefix "nano-" is often used to mean small. This derives from the Greek root 'nanos', meaning dwarf.

It's tempting to call it cool because it's so much better than anyone was expecting but that really is only from a third-world POV. Hard to call something so significant "neutral" but I can't feel any different about the car itself.

I don't really believe its significance to the motoring world has anything to do with its "coolness." It's basically a cut-price washing machine, and for heaven's sake...the rear hatch doesn't even open to keep costs down.

Plus what is its significance really? Sure, it's going to deliver a car to all sorts of people that could've previously only bought two-wheeled transportation...but in India. What happens when the proposed Nana Europa goes on sale in Europe? It'll no doubt be specced-up to meet more rigorous regulations, and with that the price will go up to. This car's main triumph is its price, and as that goes up, its appeal diminishes as well.

This is going to be a great...no, a revolutionary car, but for India, and perhaps its neighboring markets. For the rest of the world, it's just a soulless appliance.

Uncool

Makes a Camry look like an Ariel Atom. The epitome of "Washing machine syndrome" in cars. Uncool.

The Nano fulfills a certain purpose in being a cheap means of transport for the individual who has not much money. As a car it is as uncool as it can be.
