Dieselstation Car Of The Year is back! Once again it is time to reward the best new vehicles released for the new model year and admonish the crappy ones. We’re here to cover superminis to supercars, pickups to performance coupes, and everything in between.

The rules are pretty much the same as the last couple years. We're going to be voting on various categories...each category will be voted on for ten days (up from last year's seven) until it closes, and then we will take the winner from each category and pit them together for an overall vote. Like last year, we will be splitting up the trucks and SUVs from the cars, so we will have a separate overall Dieselstation Car of the Year and Dieselstation SUV/Truck of the Year. The winners from each category will go into three overall votes and from there we will crown our Dieselstation Vehicles of the Year (Truck, Sports, and non-Sports). The categories are mainly for organizational purposes, so remember when it comes time to vote to not get too hung up on the title of the category and just vote for what you think is best!

To be eligible, a car must be either a new model or significantly updated for the 2009 model year. A few vehicles have been combined with their mechanical "twins" to reduce clutter. To simplify matters, just like in the past, the competition focuses only on models sold in the United States.

This year, there are 72 cars broken down into 15 categories and 19 trucks and SUVs in 4 categories. The categories are as follows:

Car of the Year

Boy Racers (5)
Compacts (5)
Compact Luxury (5)
Convertibles under $65k (4)
Entry-Level Sport Sedans (5)
Exotics (5)
Family Cars (6)
Grand Tourers (4)
Luxury Sedans (5)
Performance Saloons (5)
Sports Cars under $65k (5)
Sports Cars over $65k (5)
Super Luxury (4)
Subcompacts (5)
Ultra-exotics (4)

Truck of the Year

Compact SUVs (4)
Family SUVs (5)
Luxury SUVs (5)
Pickups (5)

As each category gets posted for voting, it will be linked from this thread. Like last year, there will be honorable mention polls wherein every car and truck that was close to the winning vehicle will get a chance to redeem itself (close = having received a number of votes equal to or greater than 2/3rds of the winning vehicle in that category). Depending on how the voting pans out, there may be only one of these polls for all eligible vehicles (if there aren’t many close votes) or more than one (if there are).

There is only one exception to the “new for 2009” rule. Since the Lamborghini Reventon was not included in last year’s competition, it will be included in this year’s competition. This is because it was officially introduced after the ’08 competition had been concluded.

QUOTE(infinity935 @ Feb 27 2009, 11:23 AM) *
So, are we voting for the car we like most, or the car we think is the best for the segment listed?

Not to be overly anal, but I'm also curious about this question. There's certain categories where the car I want is not the car that I think is really the best in the segment. I think the GXP is the best entry-level sport sedan in that price range, but I'd personally rather have a 335i, for example.

I've always said that the category names are just for organizational purposes...I may as well just number them 1 through 19 instead of naming them. I'd like to think that if I named a category "sports sedans" or "luxury sedans" that you'd pick the same car both times? I guess that's a little weird but yeah, the idea if you vote for what you like. However you want that thought process to go is up to you.
