QUOTE After leaving the market in the early 1980's, the DeLorean brand is set to make a come-back in 2008. Stephen Wynne, a Texas entrepreneur who has owned the DeLorean Motor Co. name since 1995, has announced that he will begin production of the DeLorean next year at his 40,000 square-foot plant near Houston. According to the Detroit Free Press, the company currently handles DeLorean routine maintenance, such as oil changes and tune-ups and ships between 20 and 50 parts orders a day. In addition, the company can take an existing DeLorean, strip it to the frame and rebuild it for a base price of $42,500. Wynne's staff can rebuild one every few months. Wynne also owns the original inventory from when DeLorean went out of business. The new DMCs, which will look like the original, will be hand made using a mix of 80% original parts and 20% new, although the company only has enough doors for about 500 cars. The new car will have several improvements over the original including an improved stainless-steel frame, a stronger but lighter fiberglass underbody and upgraded electronics. A more powerful engine will also be available. The production target is set at one or two cars a month. The cost for a new DeLorean will be $57,500, or roughly the cost of the $25,000 original car in today's dollars. Leftlane |

Why don't they design a new car? That'd be more exciting.

I thought the delorean looked cool in the 80s, but not so much anymore. I also thought they were fast until I actually looked up their performance specifications.

Of course, the DeLorean was cool when these guys were cool: ![]() ![]() Bringing the car back is a good idea, but they're going to have to significantly update it if it's going to anything but a joke. |

Bringing the car back is a good idea, but they're going to have to significantly update it if it's going to anything but a joke. Making it a bit more attractive/higher performance would help. Otherwise, who cares? It was a one hit wonder car. You can't slightly redo a one hit wonder 20 years later. |
