Just wondering how many of you guys are using light meters for car/people shoots? or is everyone "chimping" it
If you guys do, how much has it helped in terms of consistent lighting? |

I have one I never use for automotive work. For fashion, models tend to be less patient than cars.

But when you utilize off camera lighting, the camera's built in meter ends up completely useless. That's why automotive photographers use the LCD and fashion photographers use light meters.

I personally think light meters are crap. They for when you're starting out & you don't know shit about your lights & how they work. 8 times out of 10 I'll do a full 2 - 5 light setup in studio & it will be virtually spot on first test shot. I just know my lights. But hey, thats just my opinion.

wasn't light meters for the old film days when they had to make sure it was exposed right? If it weren't for the LCD I'm sure I'd be taking home mega overexposed/underexposed shoots when shooting black interiors or white cars.

I know that this is wayyyy late but yes I do have one that I use regularly for film and sometimes portraiture. I know a lot of professionals that do use them and many more that do not. They really become useful if you have a set aperture you want to shoot at then you can set your key light first and adjust all the other lights around it. One guy I know who uses them religiously is Blair Bunting and his work is pretty fucking amazing. The crazy part is his images are probably 95% out of the camera - all that contrast and amazing detail comes from lots and lots of meticulously placed and metered lights.

you "trust" viewing a LCD screen in ever changing light, over a meter that tells you "exactly" what you have...
just bracket like hell, and we will find the parts in PS... modern day photographers... Hmmmmm... I guess I am getting too old... |
