These are 3 golf balls that I sputter coated each with a different metal.

Can you guess which metals?

You are correct. The one on the left is in fact Gold. 3N5 pure if I recall correctly. (That's 3 nines 5) 99.95%

We were a bit skeptical as to weather the golf ball could hold up to the high vacuum but it did just fine. The cost for the Gold target requred is around $10,000 from Kurt Lesker. I think when we did some coatings for a local company we charged around $75 per wafer.

Nope, the deposition times were around 5 minutes each and during that time the temperature doesn't go up significantly.

Yes but it isn't one of the metals. Clarkma5's guess is also incorrect.

The answers:

From left to right: Gold, Chrome, Titanium

The Ti has a very slight yellow color to it compared to the Cr and it might not even be detected by my crappy digital camera. It's even difficult to tell with the naked eye.

Thanks to all those that guessed.

This picture may be better

Here's a good link that explains what sputtering is rather well. A particularly cool thing about it is that different materials have a different coloured plasma. Chrome has about the most beautiful blue, Gold is a purple-pink colour, and I forget what color Titanium is. Molybdenum has a cool blue-white colour and is my favorite.

Just throught I'd throw that out there for you guys.

We actually try to think up new things to look at in the electron microscope.
