Oh hai,

I'm random guy from Czech Republic (Europe) who does nothing else but shoot rally. My mate 'Kip' has told me few weeks ago to come here and share my rally photos as not many of you shoot it.

I've taken a quick look through the Photography section of the forum and it seems to be full of very talented people and lot's of information - seems like I have another forum to visit on a regural basis.

I don't really have any sort of 'best of' collection that I could specifically share here, so I'm gonna just pick some random photos from this season and direct you to my website for a lot more: http://www.rallyphotos.cz/

Wow, I'm really impressed!

Now, I'm no expert, but these might be some of the best rally photos I've ever seen! Looks like you have a really nice eye for composition, and your technical skills succeeds mine by far!

Good work!

And to tell you a bit more about myself: I'm 24 years old guy working in an advertising agency, unfortunately nothing to do with photographing (just design, prepress, print and other stuff).

I visit most of the Czech rallies and usually one World Rally Championship event every year, but all of that is just on my own, not doing this as a job or something - that would be my dream job, working as a rally photographer for one of the famous agencies (McKlein)

Posted by: porsche944 Dec 21 2010, 07:52 AM

I'm pretty sure this is the best collection of rally photos anywhere, amazing work

Posted by: mopho Dec 21 2010, 10:52 AM

Great work! I really like your style.
I used to make much of my living from shooting rally until I was nearly killed in spectacular fashion. It was a lot of fun though, do miss it (well not the rainy days)

Well you must not have seen many rally photos then, there are a lot of awesome shooters in the sport around the world. I wouldn't dare say anyone is the best as everyone brings their own style to the table and what appeals to one may not to another

Actually, rainy days are my most favourite, because you have usually guaranteed a lot of action in the photos - splashes, mud, puddles... And you don't have to worry about sun at all. I developed a hate against sun during the last few years - you find the perfect spot and then the sun comes out and totally ruins your plan. It makes everything too contrasty and the dynamic range is too small to capture all of it.

For sure it made for interesting photos, but I just hated getting soaked to the bone, messing up my car (when I didn't have to fly), clothes, etc with mud, even with a rain suit and I ruined a camera in a rain storm once, which was a really expensive repair

Incredible shots thumbs_up.gif

Very impressed with the long shots considering your using a 70-300mm Sigma which I found quite slow at focusing.

I agree with some of the others that it's your compositions that really set you apart from all the other rally shots I've seen. Really makes me want to go shoot a rally now smile.gif

Posted by: Daz Dec 21 2010, 02:56 PM

Just seen the extra photo's you've added on the 2nd page and I absolutely love that first shot. Love how the towing arrow is pointing at the blast of ice and snow being broken up biggrin.gif.

I might have found me some new wallpapers biggrin.gif

well i was using the sigma 70-300 from 2006 to half of the 2008, since then its mostly the fixed Canon 200/2.8... so all of the photos i linked here are with the canon...

I've managed to kill my knee or something, so I can't really walk right now, however that didn't stop me from visiting a test session of the current Czech Rally Champion - Pavel Valousek.

Snow, ice, studded tyres, Fabia S2000 + great driving =

Ah that explains why they are miles sharper than my 70-300.

Awesome shots though.

I'll make the effort to go to the WRC rally when it's next here.

The new season is here, it started last Sunday with an amatuer Rally Slalom event, where few of my mates competed. I personally didn't like the conditions for photographing at all - no snow, everything dull, no proper scenery (as it was on airfield)... so here's just few shots im not really happy about: http://rallyphotos.cz/photos/rally_monte_slalom_biskupice_2011/

Next weekend there's another amauter event in the forests, fingers crossed for some snow.

I agree with everyone else, simply astonishing shots. Hands down the best rallyphotos ive ever seen! And shot with a 350D, really inspiring since ive owned a 350d and not even managed to take half as good shots as these.

I thinking about buying a zoom, was looking at 70-300 zooms but maybe a 70-200mm 2.8 is a good choise aswell? For a Nikon D90

Love that last shot. Did you mount the camera or grab loads of shots handheld?

The concerntration on his face really makes it.

Posted by: don Apr 22 2011, 09:09 AM

I tried to mount the cam on the rollbar using the chinese copy of gorillapod, that didn't work too well, so I just used it for a bit more stability and basically pushed the cam against the front window, so that it was stable - and of course took a lot of pics. that kind of shot would work better if it was cloudy, so there wouldn't be so big contrast. Next time smile.gif

Which is something I was considering too -considering nothing really has panning. Its all high speed shots.

Posted by: don May 16 2011, 09:32 AM

the problem with panning in rallying is that you get each car pass thru the corner just once - and if your panning fails, you will miss the car. In circuit racing you have thousand tries for each car smile.gif I'd like to do some more panning, but there's not that many corners suitable for it...

It helps a lot when there is a ton of debris in the air wink.gif

Posted by: don Jun 12 2011, 07:12 AM

I sold my 50D few weeks ago so that I could afford a 7D, unfortunately it has not yet arrived and I had to take my old rusty dusty 350D to this rally. After this "step down" I realised how much it sucks compared to the 50D - the IQ is OK, I guess you wouldn't notice a difference, but the focusing is SHIT - I had 600 photos and after deleting the ones that are badly focused, I was left with 300 photos (and I had already deleted tons of blurry photos in the camera). Impressive ratio :/

It's funny when someone with photos such as you says that he loves my shots, because I think you would take them thousand times better thumbs_up.gif

Posted by: don Jul 4 2011, 07:05 AM

I received my new camera (7D) few days before the rally and didn't have much time to get familiar with it. I also didn't realise that 8 GB CF card won't be enough for 3 days of rallying when shooting to RAW, so I chose to shoot in mRAW, which may not have been the best option - because I am not so happy about the quality it produced, I would almost say it has more noise than my previous 50D. Also I don't think the amount of 'keepers' increased - I still had to delete LOTS of badly focused photos (especially those taken with 135/f2). Oh well, perhaps I will be more happy once I shoot in proper full RAW.

They were nowhere near the kind of stuff you get! The locations of the stages in the rally were pretty boring. No trees or stuff I could use to add depth like you do. But to be honest I think my results would have been 10x worse had I NOT come through here for inspiration first. I leeched some of your awesome-ness. smile.gif

You can download the fullsize images from here http://rallyphotos.cz/requests/vsetin/all/ but because I usually just put my photos on the web, the photos are not really print-ready. I think they have way too much noise (still can't get over how damn noisy 7D is) and some of them arent 100% in focus (which you cannot see in web resolution)...

7D and 135mm f/2 for the last one:)

Amazing picture !

As Iulian says, 7D and 135/f2 for most of those. But tbh they would look the same (if not better) with 350D, the only problem there is that the focusing sucks, so I may not get any in-focus photo smile.gif

This was supposed to be a nice, photo-friendly rally, turned out to be one of the worst. Thanks to some ecologists they had to cancel the best parts of the stages sad.gif

Barum Czech Rally Zlin 2012

At this very moment, I am seriously thinking of giving up rally photography. It's not worth it for me. Same stages on every rally just like the year before, it's hard to come up with something new when you've been there 5 or more times already. I think I'd rather save up some money and visit more WRC events rather than ~10 Czech events during a year...

Good to see some new stuff from you!

Posted by: don Apr 9 2014, 08:48 AM

To be honest, I kind of lost motivation in shooting rally. The problem is they run same stages all the time and it's hard to come up with something new (especially as 99% of the stages are tarmac. Gravel is always "easier" to shoot). I'd love to shoot at WRC, travel the world, but that's nearly impossible. So I remain stuck here in Czech Republic smile.gif Atleast I hope to make it to WRC Poland later this year - should be fun.

Posted by: SC David Apr 9 2014, 11:03 AM

It's all new and interesting for those of us who have never been to the CR!
