Well, so we're all agreed that the RSi is cool/frozen and the standard New Beetle is at the opposite end of the cool scale...but what about the sportiest mass production beetle, the Turbo S?
![]() In production from 2002 to 2004, it was an odd amalgamation of standard mkIV GTI and special edition. With the 180 HP version of the 1.8T and a 6-speed manual (no automatics or flappy paddles here!) it certainly had good power for its price point, but opinions differed on its suspension, with adjectives ranging from "firm" to "wallowy" making it difficult to get a handle on the car's handling characteristics. ![]() The interior design retained a lot of its cutesy Beetle-ness, but aluminum trim and pedals and sport seats made it a nicer place to be for the performance enthusiast. As with the standard beetle, the Turbo S had a good load of features and good materials/build quality in the cabin. ![]() There was never any mistaking the exterior of the car for anything but a New Beetle, but the more aggressive front airdam and seperate turn signals gave the Turbo S a somewhat more masculine air, as well as being quite unique. ![]() And then there's the factor of its relative rarity...I mean, honestly, how often do you see a Turbo S on the road? It also gets cool points for the owner by being a brave choice in the land of the sports car wannabes. ![]() Personally, I have no idea where this car stands. I'm interested to see where you people see it. |

The cosmetic adjustments do nothing to take away the sissyness of the car, and the Audi TT is a perfect alternative. Uncool.

Cool, but only because I rode in a co-workers and I was quite amazed. I might be biased though because his had a few modifications including a front mount intercooler and he upped the boost a little bit. Once it gets warmer out I may try to do a small photoshoot with his car.

I can't claim to have anticipated such a negative slant to these proceedings...personally, I was riding the fence between cool and uncool.
In fairness to all things VW, after giving the GTI a frozen (that it may or may not have deserved) I feel obliged to give this a cool...because I definitely think it has its cool points. At the very least, chicks dig beetles...and this is a way to get beetle-loving chicks and some fun/masculinity in one package. That's how I choose to look at it, anyway. |

Porsche 911 wannabe...
![]() And the miserably doesen't stop there. It's just a VW Golg wit a new body. What they have done is destroying a classic. It doesent have a rearengine, nor rwd. So all in all they have just removed the "X-factor" the original Beetle had. And you'll really see the difference here, BMW has managed to keep the essence of Mini when recreating it. Wheras VW failed wit the Newbeetle... |

I think it looks fine, except for the rims. Factor in the fact its Turbo'd and you have yourself a nice different car. Get rid of the rims and you have yourself a nice handeling little car.

I don't get the complaints about the rims...
I just saw a silver Turbo S today on my way home, dead stock as far as I could tell. The wheels are totally unique, while not being garish or ridiculous. They're just sorta different...I really like that, even if they aren't the greatest design under the sun. |

Gaah 27 votes and we have a 3-way tie. This car will never be able to be put away in a subforum.
