Here is some breaking official information from the demo press release.

In one more day (Japan time), the most anticipate driving game of all time [Gran Turismo 5 Prologue] will be available to the PS3 as a free download. Though I am 80% sure the demo is intended to be for Japan only, however that doesn't mean all GT fans outside of Japan can't download it. I am pretty sure if you have a Japanese PSN account you will be able to download it from the Japanese PSN store. If you don't know how to create a Japanese account, stay tuned as I will be creating a step-by-step guide to create a Japanese account later today.

Here is the official info of the demo release detail:

In coordination with the 40th Tokyo Motor Show, the limited Gran Turismo 5 Prologue free demo will coincide with manufacturer's unveiling events on the show floor providing players the latest information and updates to the demo. In addition, live reports of the motor show and motor sport related news can also be downloaded through the demo.

Delivery:

* An exclusive download title for the Playstation 3 with Playstation Store online service. Playstation 3 must have a Internet connection in order to download.

* Demo cannot be downloaded with a personal computer or install from other storage media.

Availability:

* Available to download from Oct. 20th, 2007 to Nov. 11th, 2007

Content:

* Demo will include 7 playable cars as follows:
o Lexus IS-F
o Nissan GT-R
o Mazda Atenza
o Subaru Impreza WRX STI
o Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X GSR
o Daihatsu OFC-1
o BMW 135i Coupe

* Demo will include 1 course - Suzuka

* Player mode:
o Single player mode with races up to 16 cars.
o No online play for the demo.

* In coordination with the 40th Tokyo Motor Show, new cars will be unveiled in game between Oct. 23 to Oct. 25

* In game video contents included:
o Gran Turismo TV with previews and reports.
o Show floor reports direct from the 40th Tokyo Motor Show through Gran Turismo TV.
o Motor Sport related news.

That looks loke an awesome line-up of cars, all of them look like fun (save the Daihatsu). And we all know that it will look amazingly good as always.

I can't wait.

Also, how much for that Volvo, Asher?

Goddamn it, I just finally bought a PS2 and GT4, and now already my mouth is watering for a PS3 and GT5. What a great selection of cars for the demo.

But how do they know how the GTR is going to drive? We just got our first unmasked pictures a couple days ago.

That's true. This is probably the single most effective way out there to market the GTR.

According to an article in the August C&D, Polyphony doesn't really track test that many cars. They just input various data values for a particular car into their physics model to come up with the sim car's behavior. The behavior models are tweaked with help from various consultants, and Nissan's chief test driver Hiroyoshi Kato was specifically mentioned. He obviously could give them a pretty good idea how the new GT-R drives.

Although I wouldn't be too surprised if Polyphony did get some actual seat time. They worked with Nissan to design the interface for the GT-R's multifunction display.

Screw all of that, do the Ferraris sound like Ferraris? Or is it like every other GT game made so far?

I don't recall any of the GT games ever having ferraris.

GT5 will be Ferrari's debut in the game. To be honest, playing GT HD, the cars sound quite similar...

GT HD was just an updated, HD version of GT4. Hence the cars all sounding much like they did in GT4. GT5P is based on a new physics engine and AI engine, I'd hope that they updated the sounds as well.

EDIT: It seems to be available now in the JPN store. Go download.

I downloaded it this morning and it's absolutely amazing. the cars all sound very accurate and the in-car view is so detailed. Overall it still feels like GT (not a negative imo) but the AI seems to be improved.

Graphics are unbelievably good.

The AI is certainly better than GT4, but it could still use improvement. More times than not they hit me while I'm sitting in the middle of the track.

Will there be any damaging added later on?

Also, when will the IS-F, Atenza become unlocked? I'm guessing that's the new Impreza being covered also.
