Car: Skoda Octavia vRS

I have a couple of friends in "Team Örby Gummi Racing" that competes in "Mellan Svenska Långlopps Serien" an translation would be something like "Middle Swedish Endurance Series". Last year they won their class (4) and the whole series with their old Volvo with an carburetor-engine. This year they are going to participate with their new car, a Skoda Octavia vRS (they are called Skoda Octavia RS in Sweden) in the series wich contains six single eight-hour races on two diffrent swedish tracks "Mantorp" and "Sviestad" from april to september. They are a bunch of guys in the team and four drivers.

For you in the US of A (the only country in the world that Skoda doesn't sell their cars in) - Skoda is a manufacturer in the Volkswagen Auto Group, alongside VW, Audi, Seat and so on. And the Octavia is based on the Golf but has a larger body, somewhere between an Audi A4 and Audi A6. The Skoda Octavia RS is then equivalent to the VW Golf GTI with its 200 bhp 2.0 TFSI enginge and a nimble and fun chassis.

Their Skoda Octavia RS racecar is a rebuilt roadcar. Actually it was one of the guys daily driver for a couple of years, before they started the heavy modifications last year. It now has a new chassis, no interior, full safety equipment and racing tires. Together with a properly tuned (but not yeat opened) 2.0 TFSI engine with somewhere around 370 bhp (limited to that power output to withstand the pressure from eight hours of racing) they hope to give the other teams in the new class (6) and series a tough match.

I havn't seen the car IRL yet, but I'm heading down from Sthlm to Mantorp this weekend to see the premeiere race of the season. There I'll try to get some nice shots of the car with my 5D MkII and also film and edit something, including clips from their GoPro HD Motorsports Hero. For now I only have these unedited snapshots from one of the teammembers. Alongside build-threads from a couple of forums and these newly filmed incar (Go Pro) clips from the preseason tests. Hope you enjoy it so far and sorry for my awful swenglish.

Build-thread at rejsa.nu - one of Swedens biggest track-day and racing forums, on page 3 & 4 there are some interesting build-pictures:

Build-thread at RSklubben.se:

Incar clips from the preseason tests at Sviestad, nice quality from the GoPro HD Motorsports Hero in 720p & 1080p!

That is truly awesome. One of my life dreams is to enter amateur endurance racing. Kudos to them for making it happen. thumbs_up.gif

Also, you mentioned the GoPro HD cameras... are those things worth the hefty price tag?

It shure is! I took my debutant racing license last year and went to a couple of track days and an autocross, it's loads of fun! With a proper racing car and more experience I recon it truly will be awsesome.

I really think it's worth it. A friend filmed from his car (a Skoda Octavia RS TDI[!]) at the trackday we went to, with the Standard Definition Go Pro and when you compare the imagequality with the movie below to the ones in High Definition on the Racing Skoda the difference in quality is tremendous. Actually you can see me (a silver estate) overtake his TDI which lacks some power (~200 bhp) to my TFSI (~270 bhp) on the long straight. Raspberry.gif

The quality of footage is excellent... but what's going on with the sound?

Hahaha, don't mind Lancer, he was just alluding to a forum member that insists on having a tow hook on his street car because it makes him look "cooler."

Anyway, that is a pretty awesome achievement. I've read some pretty awesome stuff about the Octavia RS, awesome choice for going racing.

I think the video quality (or the resolution at least) is quite poor from the GoPro SD, but then I'm a HD-nerd wink.gif

Don't know if there is something wrong with the audio settings on the camera in that clip or if the diesel just dosn't make enough sound.

LOL!

Yes, the guys who has worked on this car has done an amazing work. It's going to be a killer. In fact it kicked some serious a** on the swedish racetrack Gotland Ring last summer, when not so heavily modified... smile.gif

For reference, Solid, this is the joke in question. And by "joke" I mean that guy's car. Read the thread for the tow hook thing.

Oh, I assumed that was implied, sorta. tongue.gif

Well, suppose I'll just, um, shamelessly, um, drop this here? whistle.gif
